I recently had an OCZ SSD drive crash after one year of flawless running Windows 8. Now, to my astonishment, I'm told that my motherboard (M2N68-LA Narra6) is not compatible with Windows 8. Could this really be true? That you need to check for motherboard compatibility when upgrading your OS? And that this may cause a 335 USD SSD drive to die?

You certainly do need to check that your motherboard is compatible with a particular version of Windows, whether it's Windows 8 or any other version. It all comes down to what drivers are available for your motherboard make & model, it's that alone which dictates compatibility.

The M2N68-LA Narra6 board is actually a Pegatron M2N68-LA rebranded by HP

There are no Windows 8 drivers for it that I can find.

I can't answer you question regarding SSD failure, but I very much doubt the board or drivers would cause it.
