I am looking at over time saving up for a under $400 gaming build, something that will run games just fine, but doesn't have to be great.
I am just looking for something that can run all modern games and upcoming games at, at least medium graphics with good fps. stuff like battlefield 4
This is what I came up with on my own. But let me know what you guys would change. Also, I already have a 500gb seagate 7200rpm hard drive.

Solution
dual channel ram will improve the performance greatly.
for the given budget including windows I can not guarantee that all games will be playable at medium at 1080p but for lower resolutions everything will be possible.
do you already own a psu?
here my edit:

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/36O0X
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/36O0X/by_merchant/
Benchmarks: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/36O0X/benchmarks/

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($84.74 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A55M-HD2 Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($47.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB Video Card...
If you are playing at low resolution, then that is fine for low to medium in games like battlefield.

But at higher resolution like 1600*1050 or 1920*1080, you have no hope with that budget.

Add another 4GB of RAM however.
Also DO NOT get a chassis with a built in PSU, they are junk and very likely to fail and take your system with.

Ok, I put a revised list up. Like I said this will be built over time. So I can add another 4 gb of RAM later, and I plan to. Just worried about the video card. From what I seen on battlefield 4 benchmarks it looks like it will run bf4 on medium fine. I dont mind running in 720p.

I do have a X Power ps-450w here, Could I use that? And I can probably go over budget including windows a little. So if I play in 720p with that card, it would run almost everything fine? How big of a difference is there in 1080p and 720p? As far as the CPU and motherboard I choose, will those be good enough for this budget build?

yes cpu / mainboard and gpu will run anything at medium at 720p (1280x720 up to 1600x900)
given that the low level texture at 1920x1080 is similar to that of medium or higher 1366x768 the gpu will be more strained depending on the pressure of the settings (1366 was an example).
yet at 720p the hdd 7770 should be a budget killer so no worries regarding that.
as for the x psu you mean this one? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1272461
if yes I would power the rig on with it and run 1-2km away from it while trying to hold my ears from any sound.
kk I am overexaggerating but that psu is at best a super low tier 4 if even 4 at all which might cause damage to the new rig.
for safety measures I would at least go for a tier 3 psu: something along the lines of corsair cx.
any quality at least 400w psu should be able to handle that rig.

Haha, yes thats the one. I figured it wouldn't be good enough. I was planning on getting the corsair cx430 anyway. Ok I will look into getting the HD7770. Sounds like it will do what I need it to.

Cool, I will have two hooked up, but will only be gaming on one of them. Well looks like I have somewhere to start. I will just start buying a couple pieces at a time when they are on sale.

one other thing, What is the deference between all the different variations of the hd 7770? An I looking for certain ones? Do I just want something at least 1gb? And what about the speed? noticed some are cheaper than others, and some have better sales.

just be sure that the hd 7770 you buy has an good after market cooler, is factory overclocked and has good support. you can check that by reading reviews you find through google on respective model of gpu.
as for hd 7770 the 2gb is more of a gimmick. the 7770 is not able to push way to far so there is no difference in performance between 1gb and 2gb. only reason to get 2 gb version would be if you crossfire later 2x 7770.
I would suggest going for a oced sapphire 7770 with good cooler because sapphire works directly with amd and offers good support.
you can check asus, msi and gigabyte as well. they are all reliable.

the msi in the link and sapphire I have suggested have been both stabilized at same core clock. so there is practically no difference. the asus you posted has been factory overclocked at 1.02 ghz which will give an small boost but nothing significant. out of the 3 versions of hd 7770 i would go with either the asus or the sapphire one due to better customer support.
