is the Xeon family worth using for gaming and recording and video editing and rendering?
i read that they don't have integrated graphics, is it true? is it a better choice than the i7-4770K? is it cheaper? better performance? I specifically read about the xeon 1230 v3.
i plan using a GTX 780 Ti
thank you in advance,
MrLe0 (OneShotGaming) :)

I think it is great for budget, but you cant overclock like the i7. If you plan on doing any overclocking, you should go with the i7-4770k.
The same cpu, doesnt have integrated graphics, a little cheaper, but cannot be overclocked.
It will perform about the same as an i7-4770k, but the i7 will be faster when overclocked.

Yeah, really good.

it's as good at rendering/editing as the 4770/4770K but the K edition can faster if overclock it.

Doesn't have integrated graphics, who cares you have one the best consumer GPU's in existance in the 780 ti.

Personally I think the Xeon 1230 V3 represents great value for money as you can run it on the stock cooler and any motherboard (B85,H87,Q87) meaning you don't need to buy a Z87 motherboard + aftermarket cooler to overclock on like you would need for the 4770k.

Well a Xeon is typically used in servers, where it is well suited form applications and databases, not really your best option for your particular applications. So, no don't get it for gaming. Nothing wrong with using for your other stuff though.

if he in the future wants to upgrade to sli, he would have to use z87 chipset anyway, the only 1150 socket supporting sli..
If you have the money, i think you should go for i7 unlocked and a z87 chipset, at least if u overclock or want sli.

Wrong. It's the exact same chip as an i7 4770, and will perform almost identically(-100/-200mhz) in all tasks. It is an awesome chip for gaming and everything else.

Overclocking isn't the end of the world.

OP can get Xeon + Cheap Z87 mobo(the more expensive ones usually OC better/have more sli slots) and still save $150 dollars on the i7? From Cooler+Processor.

Also Xeon performs as good as i7 4770 in gaming/rendering it doesn't matter that's it built for servers. They're almost the same chip except the IGPU and clocking of 100mhz difference.

I think if you bought a z87 motherboard, you should use its features to overclock the chip, just my opinion though. Yes he could get a cheap one, supporting sli and not great overclocking and instead get the xeon.

The xeon is not unlocked. You cannot overclock it.
As for sli goes. You need z87 chipset, the only lga1150 chipset supporting sli.
I thought, why not get an overclockable cpu with the motherboard supporting overclock.

ok, so i should get an i7-4770K overclocked and a Z87 motherboard so that i'm ready for SLI if i upgrade. right?
what motherboard do you think is best for it?
(no shitty plastic covering the beautiful electronics please ;) )
i will buy 16-32 GB RAM
as i already said a GTX 780 Ti
a water cooling
a nice big case

What i think, is that you want sli, pick z87. I rly like msi g45,g65. Asus are good too, but expensive where i live, maybe go with maximus hero if you got the money.

If you want to overclock, pick the i7, if not, the xeon. Z87 is ready to overclock.

At stock, the i7 and xeon perform almost the same.(i7 being faster because of clock, but also pricier)

I am soon building my first computer and I am going to be getting that Intel Xeon 1230 v3 processor. I will be doing video editing with Sony Vegas Pro 12 as well as some music production. The processor was recommended to me in a forum on another site so I looked into it and it makes the most sense. There are risks to overclocking. If there weren't then the processors would be cranked up to higher speeds by default. You can game just fine at stock speeds as well as perform plenty of other tasks. I would recommend going with the Xeon 1230 v3 processor and once you learn more over time then maybe look at overclocking in a later build.

Overclocking isnt excactly dangerous, just a little risky.
Amd showed us that they hit 5ghz no problem.
The problem is cooling. Intel ship processors with coolers which can easily be mass produced with low cost. If they included a beast watercooler, they probably would oc to around 4.2-4.8 ghz. Just a guess.
