I'm building a new PC for my wife and I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to go with a GTX 760 for $250 and wait for Maxwell and DX12, or if I should just get her a GTX 780 SC for $489 now and hope that it lasts her 2-3 years. If it was your build, what would you do? I'm not interested in the GTX 780ti or anything from AMD. She currently doesn't have a PC so there's no card lying around that I can use instead haha. Thanks guys!

It depends whether you need now or not. Personally, I would gtx 760, but I would wait instead of buying gtx 780. 500 is a high price for a card now approaching a year of age.

If she's using a 1080p monitor I'd go with a 770. I have seen several of them for $320-$330 over the last couple of weeks, and I think that the ~$80 is worth the upgrade from the 760, but the 780 isn't $150 better than the 770 unless you're going to be playing at 2560x1440 or above.

All NVidia cards from Femi onwards are dx12 ,dx12 is going to be a major improvement on efficiency rather than a total new revamp of features its similar to AMD's mantle.

from what i heard so far DX12 will have new feature that will require new hardware. but stuffs like driver overhead reduction stuff still applicable to current DX11 hardware. at least that's how it was for nvidia. for AMD part they only confirm GCN based gpu will be compatible with Dx12. no words on HD5k and HD6k will support Dx12 feature or not
