I had a question before I begin building. Do you have to have BOTH USB 2.0 and 3.0 connected in order to have your computer running successfully or can you have only 3.0 connected. The reason I am asking is because I have a 3.0 and 2.0 connector combined together and it says you only have to have only one connected, so I don't know which one to connect. Do I have to have both connected? Is my case most common or separate 3.0 and 2.0 cables common?

Solution

You're welcome :)
You don't have to do something with the back of your PC just connect case 3.0 cable to mobo 3.0 header and you'll be fine :)

I don't think so. It says you can't have both connected. Any other option or anything? Oh and when you connect USB headers, does that only apply to the front of the computer only or somewhere else too?

I have no headers. Just one wire that is a 3.0 connector which is also combined with a 2.0 connector and it tells me I can't connect both, so what do I do?

What case do you have could you link your case please?

Now i understand! Your case has combo port because many old mobo doesn't have USB 3.0 ports so in this case it's possible to use USB 2.0 (combo cable) on 3.0 header if you plug USB 2.0 cable on your mobo!
So your mobo should have USB 3.0 ports! just connect USB 3.0 case cable onto your mobo port!

So you don't have to have both in right? My mother board is "http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131980" If I only have the 3.0 header plugged in, can I use the 2.0 ports on the back or it won't work?

There is a note inside the case that says you can ONLY PLUG IN one. Either the 3.0 header or the 2.0 header. I only have to use one, so in this case which one do I plug in. Is it normal to only plug in one? In most cases, people have separate 3.0 and 2.0 headers and they connect both of them. Do I have to route the cables through the back and hook them up to the motherboard ports or what?

Thanks so much and one more thing, I don't route anything from the back right?
