Hey guys,

Just got my first SSD (Samsung 840 EVO 250GB). I've installed the Samsung Magician software and ran a Performance Benchmark test and I'd like to know if that's what they should be or not. Keep in mind the SSD does not have the OS installed on it, it currently only has one game installed onto it.

Results:

Sequential Read - 397 (Up to 540)
Sequential Write - 375 (Up to 520)
Random Read (IOPS) - 61,084 (Up TO 97,000)
Random Write (IOPS) - 55,620 (Up to 66,000)

Now to me they seem a tad low but I have no idea what they should be as it's not running the OS and it only has one game installed but if you guys could give me your feedback I'd really appreciate it :).

Many thanks!.

Hey bud,

Sorry what do you mean "what MB" ?

CPU - I7 4770K

I'm not sure if I am on a SATA III port or not, any way for me to check?. My Motherboard is "Asus Z87-Plus Socket 1150" and on the storage section it says:

Storage
Intel® Z87 Express Chipset with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10
- 6 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (yellow)
- Supports Intel® Smart Response Technology, Intel® Rapid Start Technology, Intel® Smart Connect Technology*
ASMedia® SATA 6Gb/s controller**
- 2 x SATA 6Gb/s ports (dark brown)
* Supports on Intel® Core™ processor family.
** These SATA ports are for data hard drivers only. ATAPI devices are not supported.

Port controller? Intel maybe? sorry as you can tell I'm a noob when it comes to this kinda stuff. Only saying Intel cause...

Ok mate thank you. I saw some benchmark results with the same SSD and the results were at the top for all four of them so was curious why mine were lower.

Your results look slow to me.
What MB?
What CPU?
Are you on a SATA III port?
What kind of port controller? (Intel, Asmedia, etc.)
Have you installed Samsung's Magician software and applied any optimizations?

Yes I have installed the Magician software and I've optimized it for Max Performance but I deactivated Hibernation Mode as I've never liked it.

Thanks mate.

UPDATE: I just checked the device manager in the IDE and it says "Intel 8 series C220 chipset family SATA AHCI controller".

MB = Motherboard. You already answered this.

It's good that you deactivated Hibernation and performed the Magician Optimizations.

From what you posted, I believe that you want your SSD to be plugged into one of the yellow ports, which if I am reading this right, should be the native Intel SATA III controller ports. DO NOT use the Asmedia ports as they will not be as fast.

You sir are a genius! :)

Just swapped it from the dark brown port to the yellow port and my results are now:

Sequential Read - 544 (Max 540)
Sequential Write - 524 (Max 520)
Random Read (IOPS) - 95,609 (Up to 97,000)
Random Write (IOPS) - 80,628 (Up to 66,000)

Thanks a lot buddy, really appreciate the help :).

You're welcome! Glad that it worked.

Now for even more dramatic results, go back into Magician and enable "Rapid Mode". This will enable the computer to use up to 1 GB of system RAM as a cache and nearly double your benchmark results!

I got 16GB RAM so it should be fine. I enabled Rapid Mode and all I can say is WOW. My results now are:

Sequential Read - 1154 (Up to 540)
Sequential Write - 1131 (Up to 520)
Random Read (IOPS) - 175,717 TO 97,000)
Random Write (IOPS) - 173,165 (Up to 66,000)

That is insane compared to my old hard drive. Once again, thank you so much, I really appreciate it :).

Evo 840 250 GB

SR (2966MBs) SW (2015MBs)
RR102516 IOPS RW62213 IOPS.

Something is broken right? I saw someone with over 1000 SR/SW But I am on a Phenom X4 8gb DDR2 obviously sata 2.0

I don't see any problem with those readings, especially for SATA II.

If you would like further verification and discussion, start a new thread in the Storage Forum. That will always give a better response.

dont know why, i ALWAYS receive this write and read speeds up there

Maybe someone can explain my results. I have two 250Gb 840 EVOs in RAID 0. Could the RAID be skewing the numbers?
