Mass Storage Controller for ASUS P5GD1

I am updating my trusty ol' PC (which was running Win XP for a number of years) with an ASUS P5GD1 mobo to Win 7 (SP1).
The update has gone well and now Win 7 is up and running and I have updated the OS, tweaked the Realtek HD audio and Geforce 9900 drivers - mainly everything is working OK, external USB drives, DVD drive, etc...
In Device Manager I have an 'error' (exclamation mark) for Mass Storage Controller - not sure what this controls and if it's really needed but...
- I have a 2nd internal "IDE" hard drive (the C drive is a SATA) and when booting the BIOS appears to see the IDE drive but when Win 7 is running I can't find that drive - so I'm guessing it has something to do with the Mass Storage Controller issue... ??

Welcome any advice, suggestions and education...

Cheers

P.S. FYI - When I reboot into Win XP after swapping out the Win 7 SATA drive and putting back in the orig Win XP drive I am able to see IDE drive in Explorer - so I'm sure there is nothing wrong with that drive...

Solution
I played around a bit with trying to connect the IDE hard drive to the ribbon cable for the DVD/CD unit but I wasn't making much progress, so I tried using the IDE to SATA adapter and it worked perfectly.

I plugged in the adapter to the IDE drive, plugged in the molex power plug to the drive, plugged in the power cord to the adapter and connected a SATA data cable to the adapter and plugged the other end to a SATA port on the mobo - and after booting into Win 7 now I can see the "IDE" drive...

Problem solved!

Unfortunately haven't rec'd any comments so might as well try and answer my own question (after some ongoing investigation...)

I am working on updating the mobo BIOS (from ver 1006 to 1018) just in case that helps fix this issue.

I have also came up with the idea of installing the old IDE drive into an IDE USB enclosure and plugging it into a USB port as a work around to be able to access the old drive.

The other idea I'm looking into is to install and IDE to SATA adapter on the old drive and connect it into my mobo as a "SATA" - but would be interested in any feedback on this approach and/or suggestions on a good/recommended IDE-SATA adapter to use...

Still working my way through this while I'm waiting for the IDE-SATA adapter I have on order...

In the meantime however I got thinking that my DVD writer drive still works perfectly and it's an IDE drive !!??

Why does the system recognize that IDE connection and not my IDE hard drive? The DVD is on a separate IDE riboon cable and connector so maybe for some reason only that IDE is being detected - so am going to temporarily try;
- connecting the IDE hard drive in place of the DVD on that 'working' ribbon cable, and
- also connecting the IDE hard drive (probably set as the Slave) on the same ribbon cable as the DVD (set as Master)
and see what happens...
