Approximate Purchase Date: Within a month (roughly 30 or less days).

Budget: £1,000 ($1,650)

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
Gaming
Music
Web surfing
Movies
Occasional video rendering

Are you buying a monitor: Not at the moment but will most likely soon, depending on how much this build comes to.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Need help deciding between W7 & W8.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Any website that is ideal for UK deliveries.

Location: UK.

Parts Preferences: Preferably an Intel CPU & an Nvidia GPU.

Overclocking: Maybe.

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe.

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080, will most likely upgrade soon... Some recommendations are welcome!

Additional Comments: A window on the case would be nice & possibly LED lights. A quiet PC isn't exactly necessary since I've put up with my leaf blower PC for a pretty long time, but obviously if possible silence would be ideal.

I use Sony Vegas for my occasional video rendering and Fraps & Camtasia as my game/screen recorders. I play almost any genre of game from massive titles to the not so known ones.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: It's just time for a change from my old, incredibly outdated PC.

I'm thinking of going with a GTX 770 GPU & not sure what CPU to choose between an i5 and an i7, so some advice on the differences and pros/cons of both would be welcome. I'm open to your advice and recommendations. I also wouldn't mind a decent 120GB SSD boot drive.

For a gaming build imho i5 + GTX780 is great at this price range. You should get a 1080p 144Hz monitor like this ASUS:

intel i5 3570k, 8gb ram, very nice mobo, great psu, gtx 780, windows 7, but you can get 8 if you want, but its a personal preference thing, although windows 8 performs a tiny bit faster, like a couple fps. also has an internal wifi adapter if you need it, and is 45 Euros cheaper than your budget :)

great build, however, your cpu and mobo are socket 1155, which will be discontinued within the next few years. the next gen of cpus, broadwell, will be socket 1150, so while his cpu is 6% faster, the one i picked is easilt upgradable. either build will perform about the same for now, but for future upgrades, i would go with mine. and yeah, see if you can get a 120hz or 144hz monitor.

Thanks for your help guys, although from what I see Danbuscus25 you're the one that listed a socket 1155 mobo, so I don't quite understand that about your reply to filippi was about... In my mind the i5 4670K CPU appeals to me much more than the i5 3570K... Also, would an i7 make that much of a difference gaming wise overall? I just want to know the main benefits.

This will be my first actual build that I'll be doing myself, as a novice, is there really any difficulties I should worry about when I begin building?

Thanks for the advice on monitors, I'll probably grab a 144Hz monitor when the time comes.

for gaming, you do not need an i7. and when it comes time to build, just watch a couple videos on youtube on how to build your pc. and dont plug things from your psu that you arent 100% sure go where they need to go, cuz some cables can fit multiple headers on the mobo, and putting it on the wrong one can kill your mobo.

Hey, an i7 does save at least 12 seconds or so on the occasional video rendering part.
