Basically alot has happened today. My core temps were running at 70C + earlier so I opened up my pc and cleaned/reapplied what thermal paste to my CPU as it appeared to of vanished, I also resecured my H80 firmly.

This seemed to work as now I had idle temps of 27-30C on CPU. However, I noticed that my resolution was 1920x1080 when my monitor runs 2560x1440 and always has done.

I installed latest drivers from AMD website and shutdown. Ever since then I cant turn my pc back on, no response, no lights, no power, no nothing. I have tried removing ram/gfx cards etc to see if they were problem, still wont boot up.

Please help

Yeh, thats always the first stuff I check. Every power cable is plugged in firmly. I just dont understand. Why would it suddenly just not turn on? Surely the PSU cant just suddenly be broken.

Is there anything I can do to narrow down a culprit? If it is the motherboard how can I tell?

CPU - i5 2500k
Mobo - Asrock Z68 extreme 4
GPU - AMD XFX 6970 2gb x2 Crossfire
PSU - 850w XFX Gold Non Modular

Have you tried powering it on with everything taken off of the motherboard except the CPU and fan? That's as basic as it gets. If it won't power up like that, it might be the PSU. If the motherboard is getting power, there should be a small LED somewhere on the board that will light up. As crazy as it sounds, I have had old PSU's stop working just from opening up the case.

Even if a CPU is damaged, the PC would still receive power when I turn it on right?

I will try what you said next.

One thing Im curious about though is I do have a old dell 425w PSU laying about for years. Is that compatible with my asrock z68 extreme 4 mobo AND will it be power enough to run the mobo and my SSD and other hardrive and USB's?

Atleast then if my PSU is bust I can still do things on my PC like watch movies/ plsy dota as I can sitll rely on the integrated graphics.

check if your psu is surely working...(use the paperclip trick...heres the link to how to do it if you dont know it already... http://aphnetworks.com/tutorials/psu_paperclip_trick )
if it is working, try replacing the cmos battery (that small silver thing on your mobo) or use the cmos jumper (if you have it) to reset your cmos configuration...
a 425 psu should work without crossfire...

Thanks for all replies.

PC was shorting out from a USB at front of pc that has somehow become damaged and was touching metal causing pc to short out and not power on.

I now have a new problem where it seems my monitor wont achieve max resolution of 2560x1440, and will only reach 1900x1200.

Im going to look into this myself for a while before I bother any of you here though. Ill update you if things don't change,

Thanks again
