Couple Issues with Pace 4111n

Hi I recently got set up with a Pace 4111n. I am having two problems that I think are related to it.

First is that my DirecTV set top box will not connect to it. It sees a strong signal, but will not connect. I'm assuming there might be some firewall set up on the router or some other incompatibility that I'm hoping I can fix by changing a setting on the router?

Second is my work VPN. I connect remotely to my employee via a Cisco VPN software. It will connect, but always after a minute or two it drops. I have read elsewhere that this could also be related to some setting on the router that I might be able to change.

I'm hoping someone could give me some advice on how to address? Without being able to do these two things there is little point for me to have ATT dsl in my house.
