I'm doing a new build and I'll be purchasing and building all of my components in the summer after my exams (hopefully the cost of ram will be on its way back down!), would it be worth getting 16gb of ram or should I just stick with 8? This is the build I'm looking at making http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/37v36 . I was wondering whether it would be worth it to be future-proof and no need to upgrade in the future, or should I just wait until I need it then. Also what would be the restricting factor if this was the case? Many thanks in advance.

games of our time now do not use more than 8gbs. if you do any kind of coding or video editing or similar software then you should go with 16gb. as far as for the future....imo i dont think games will use more than 8gb until they become optimized for 6 cores which will be a while, there may be a few oddballs that come out that are optimized for 4 cores that use a little over 8gbs but they will be rare imo

In my personal opinion, 16GB is a bit much. The only reason you should have 16GB of RAM is if you are into video editing. Considering you opted for an i5 instead of the i7, you probably aren't. The only reason I have 16GB of RAM is when i first built my rig I ordered 8GB then when i upgraded motherboards, the new motherboard came with another 8GB. 8GB of RAM will last you a long time, and before you will NEED to upgrade your RAM you will probably have a new build anyways. I think you should go with the 8GB for now, and if you see yourself needing more in the future then go with another 8GB.
