I have the Sapphire r9 290x and I've been mining with cgminer just fine for a few weeks. I decided to give sgminer a go and after starting up the screen immediately goes black. I can start windows fine but after about 30 seconds the screen goes black again. I have tried everything... I restored to a couple days ago, i disabled all startup applications. I started in safe mode. This happened to me a few days ago and somehow I fixed it but I tried running sgminer again and the same thing happened. Any ideas why or how to fix it?

It might be very tedious, but re-do every thing you did to get it fixed, started with the last thing, moving towards the first. Then, don't use sgminer.
No, I don't know why it happened, but you already fixed it once. When you disable a start up application, you can check Google to see what exactly it is. This might be time consuming and endlessly frustrating if you only get 30 seconds of desktop usage. Likely, there is something related to sgminer that's causing the issue.
As safe mode was the last thing you tried, try that first. I'm sorry if you've already gone through all of this.
You can try doing a clean install on a different disc, such as a LiveCD/USB, which would leave your current disc intact. You could then get any information you want to keep from the main disc, and then do a reinstall. That's a little bit drastic, but if you must, then that's at least an option that would work.
