dell inspiron 1525 no bootable devices

my laptop stopped booting and gives the no bootable devices message. I've removed the hard drive and re-inserted it with the same result. I bought a new hard drive and installed it, tried booting from reinstallation disk but still no hard drive detected. Any thoughts on what to try next? Could the connection pins between the hard drive and motherboard need cleaning?
