AHCI to RAID switch question

Trying to figure out why I was previously able to swap between AHCI and RAID without reinstall and can't now.

Ok so riddle me this. Last week I was setting up a new system. Asus z87 plus, 4770k, 16gb ram, and a samsung 840 pro.

Started off in AHCI and installed windows and all updated drivers from Asus site. Since I planned on adding some drives for RAID0, after my initial setup was complete I entered the bios and switched from AHCI TO RAID and rebooted. Upon doing so windows loaded the RST raid driver automatically. From there I was able to actually enter the bios and switch between AHCI and RAID modes and boot right back into windows no problem. I was doing this out of curiosity after installing samsung magician sw to test which mode was yielding the best speeds, and to decide if I wanted to run intel raid from the bios, or windows raid from within computer management(not a big fan of the latter).

Well fast forward to now... The Asus board wound up being bad(frozen RTC issue) so I returned it and bought an almost is identical Asrock Z87 extreme 4. I ran thru the same exact setup steps as I did the week prior(plus I've been doing this for 15 years) and for whatever reason I can NOT switch between AHCI to RAID within the bios without getting a BSOD.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer!
