logging on problem

I have an acer aspire 5735. When trying to log on it states the user profile service failed the log on. User profile cannot be located.

Have never had this problem before and it keeps taking me in circles back to the log on page. I am 100% sure I am using the correct password. No one uses the laptop apart from me.
Any ideas?

What version of Windows are you running? This was in Components and I moved it to Win7. If this is the wrong OS, please let me know.

How long have you had the machine and been able to log in? Do you keep backups?

I am on windows vista and have been logging on with no problems for the last 5 years or so.
