CPU upgrade for eMachines 1331g

Hi, I have an emachines 1331g. Though they don't have a great rep, I have really liked this machine, but I want to upgrade to a fast processor. I would change out both the motherboard (which I wish I could do because this one doesn't support AHCI) and cpu, but then I'd have to get a new OS and more. I think if you just change the CPU on this machine, you don't have to re-activate. I found a post on here about this exact subject but it's 3 or 4 years old. I'm confused about the whole AM3 AM3+ FM2 socket thing. From what I've already learned, I believe this is an AM3 socket on the motherboard and will support 800mhz and around 89 watts.

The recommended CPU from the old post was a AMD Athlon II X4 640 3ghz quad (believe the $ADX640WFK42GM)
Here are all the specs:

emachines ET1331g: (DDR2 running 6GB)

Running Windows 7 Home premium

BIOS: AMI P01-A0 (8/13/2009)

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 235e (socket AM3 [938]) Not sure about this: 800mhz?

Motherboard: MCP61PM-GM (NVIDIA MCP61)

All the CPUs I see on-sale are FM2, etc. Like I said, I have read and read and even found an article describing all the 'sockets' but still couldn't figure out which I could use with this motherboard.

Thanks to anyone and everyone who can help me from my nightmare....LOL I just want to speed this machine up to as fast as I can without replacing the motherboard (though I'll accept advice on that too). Any advice welcome!

It really isn't worth sticking money into such an old rig. Look at the front panel connection on the motherboard. Does the case use individual connectors or is it just one big block? If it is individual, like an old Emachines case I have, then you can reuse the case for a system rebuild. AM3 chips are no longer being produced, so they can be difficult to find. How much you willing to spend here?

The problem with )EM builds is usually the bios (not the socket type) limits the CPU's that can be used. Unless someone has actually replaced a CPU in this model, your best bet is to contact Emachines.

The CPU and Motherboard specs will both list what "socket" they use, they have generally have to match exactly in most cases (exception being using an AM3 processor in an AM3+ socket/mobo)

You could get a faster processor, but your ram will be your next slowest component, and you don't really have any room to upgrade there.

Ok, I'm trying to follow all these replies:

(1) are you saying that the motherboard is AM2+ with an AM3 chip?
(2) I realize it's five years old, but, in my world....LOL....that's not old. Before my original post, I found a solid deal on a new system (for general use), but I still want to work on this one. I originally wanted to build my own, but decided to make that a project and maybe using the emachines is my chance. I can't spent a lot and was going to do it little by little (watching sales). Give me some ideas and I'll tell you if you're in my ball park.
(3) As a fallback, I am still thinking of just the CPU and just want to know if the one I mentioned (X4) will work? In the other post, the guy said he was using it on the same motherboard (but he was the only source) I found it on ebay for under $50. I listed my BIOS, will I need to change it? (because the other guy said BIOS would be the problem).
(4) I've tried to contact emachines in the past. It's a useless proposition.

I'm willing to do the work....just need to be pointed in the right direction (understanding I'm probably a 6 on a knowledge scale).

1) Yes, AM3 chips could run in AM2+ or AM3 boards. The memory controller is on the CPU and AM3 chips have a memory controller for both types.
2) In pc time, 5yrs is a lot. If the case is reusable, I was thinking something like this, just to start. It would at least then give you an upgrade path to something better.
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz Dual-Core Processor ($65.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($42.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $178.96
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

3) I cannot guarantee that it will work. It is socket compatible, but if the bios doesn't recognize it, it won't work.

4) Emachines is pretty useless. lol

Does the front panel connectors look something like this on your motherboard?

give a man a fish, he'll eat that night...teach a man to fish, he'll eat for life In other words, I want to learn.

Just so you don't think I'm leeching, I had found some of this info on my own. Like the data sheet for my motherboard and PC Part Picker. My browsing history for the last month looks CRAZY!

1) I'm almost positive the front panel headers on mine look like that. I would have to pull it out of the hutch on my desk and can't get to it right now. I'll try to take a pic later tonight. I wondered why you were asking and looked it up. I'm guessing that the newer motherboards have different types of headers and mine are legacy? Which, can't you just replace the wires to the power, etc.? Yes, I can solder (if needed). But, I've seen prices on cases at both Tiger and NewExx and it really doesn't cost that much for a case (though I would save a few dollars).

2) Too bad I didn't catch you on a forum before I bought the new one. I probably would have gone custom, but alas, it gets delivered tomorrow. In fact, I get the texts from NewExx Shell Shocker and they have a text deal on the same configuration as the new one I bought, but as a kit. About the same price (time I added OS), but it wouldn't be prebuilt and wouldn't have retail CPU, etc.

3) I had already used PC part picker to configure a couple of ideas. I'm guessing you used that particular configuration because of the emachine case? My configuration (when I thought of building) was an Intel i5. I'm subscribed to both NewExx and Tiger and watch all the specials. I'm not a gamer, but I am a amateur photographer and want a system to do video editing (and they are about the same). I was just trying to figure out why you chose the particular config, unless it was to be able to simply plug into the emachines I already have (though I don't know if I would be able to activate Windows with all those changes). Trying to learn here. If it's the best route to simply upgrade my system, then I understand....and give you many thanks....and may do that.

4) Another reason for doing all this is that I have been fooling with VirtualBox as well as Hackintoshing. But, I'd also like to learn things like overclocking to add to all this. Anyway, back to VM...you may be able to answer a question about my laptop (if this is overkill, you won't hurt my feelings by saying so). I have a Toshiba A305-6872. I also want to replace the CPU on it. In this case, the reason is VT. I want to go from an Intel T5800 to a T9300. The current T5800 doesn't have hardware virtualization. I've been told that I can upgrade to the T9300, (P socket, 800mhz same as the current), but I'm concerned about the BIOS. It's INSYDE 2.2 and it shows -VT in the version changes, but it doesn't appear on my BIOS. I'm guess that's only because the T5800 doesn't have -VT and that once I change the CPU, the option will show up in BIOS? I had the same problem with this one as far as looking stuff up because of it being prebuilt. I'm really trying to do all this on my own..

Like I said, I know this is a slew of questions, but you can always point me to stuff to read (though my brain is fried over the last month of reading)....

Thanks again.

Here's the link to the pic of the guy that said he was using the AMD Athlon X4 640 3ghz quad on the same motherboard as mine: http://i.imgur.com/oBWsOc2.png

Like I said, if I just go this simple route for now, I'm just worried about BIOS and his was a very old post so I can't find any more info from him.

BTW, I think I have a limit of 5 posts on here; so, I have to watch my numbers....

the connectors are standard and not some independant one off design. I'm not 100% sure and AIIx4 will work but I know a phenom II x3 720be will work (I have a 1331g computer that came with a 250u cpu). This is my young son's pc and runs all the games he plays just fine.
