Hello, I have a 3930k, currenctly running at 4.4ghz on a ASrock x79 extreme4, I believe the voltage is around 1.360 (cpuz). That's too high, i know, but I'm using the Auto-overclock settings. It can be set up from 3.2ghz to 5.4ghz going up by 0.2ghz. I thought this funtion was stupid, but I tried it. seing it still throtles down allot while idling I thought I'd try to keep a OC with this Auto funtion. The only backdraw i see, is the voltage. Like i said, the voltage is set WAY to high for what the OC is. I could run 4.6ghz at 1.360, right?!

Anyway, I have 2 questions:
-What's the MAX OC you'd reccomend me? My Extreme4 ain't the sharpest tool, The VRM Ain't watercooled, just the 200mm fan from my HAF922 blowing inwards.
-If i'd load up the settings in the BIOS from the AUTO Overclock, to let's say 4.4, seeing the voltage is stupidly high, could i load these settings and just change the multiplier from 44 to 45,46?? So, as an example, the voltage for 4.4ghz is 1.360V, but I'd be running 4.5 or 4.6ghz on it. You know, than the OC would ACTUALLY match my voltage. Atlease I'd load up the profile for 4.2ghz and set it to 4.4. Is such an action doable?

Oh, my cooler is the Corsair H100i. While gaming my CPU is around 50-55 @4.4ghz

Thanks!!

I'm not sure EXACTLY what every funtion does. I just think this whole Auto-OC is crazily easy. I'll definetely try doing OC'ing myself, but what's the maximum you'd reccomend me?? I was thinking about going up to 4,6ghz? At the 1,360 or 1,380V mark. Is that ok? Can my motherboard handle it? I want to have an OC, that wont make my hardware lifetime MUCH shorter. I wanna run this PC for atleast another 3 years.

Does frequency increase stress my VRMs, or does it only get stressed more when increasing Voltage?

Thanks! :)

I would limit Vcore to 1.350 v. which should give you 4.5 GHz pretty easily, maybe 4.6.

Both frequency an voltage increases put additional stress on the VRMs, but mostly voltage.

Thanks, you think my vrms would be safe?
As for the voltage, I guess it depends on the chip, someone told me he couldn't do 4.5ghz under 1.4V, whilst some achieve it at 1.275V lol...

Ill try to limit and get back to you :)

Your MB has a 6+2 power phase design. As long as you have good case airflow, the VRMs should be fine.

Good luck!

Well, I went into Voltage config, it's at 1.368, offset mode, with 0.120 + or something. I don't know what the 0.120 thing means, but I can't set the voltage manually! Everytime i press on it, it just adds a scroll down menu to choose: AUTOMATIC, OFFSET, FIXED. Help?
Is this safe? What I'm doing? 4.6ghz at soon to be 1.35V? :D
Sorry, just don't want to suddenly loose my cpu or motherboard...

I dropped it back to 4.0ghz. Looks like the voltage is constantly at 1.368. I guess the only way to OC to say, 4.5ghz is with fixed voltage? I guess offset ain't a good choice, when overclocking...

Any other function I should apply? Or can I just Apply multiplier 45 and set the voltage to 1.35V?

I put it on 4.5ghz @1.320V, runs preety well, but I need to do some more stress testing. Should i enable or disable intel speed step technology? The thing that lowers my voltage and mutliplier when idling? thanks in advance :)

If you are satisfied with 4.5 GHz, try reducing your voltage in small steps until it becomes unstable. Intel burn test will give you a quick answer on stability. Keep an eye on core temps while running IBT as it really puts a lot of stress on the CPU!

How are your core temps at 4.5?

I personally use Intel Speed Step to reduce CPU speed and voltage when running low load situations, so I would say yes, keep it on.

Ill try undervolting on saturday. Temps at idle are aroundd 35C, when playing anything, around 50-55C. I'm running triple screen, so it might stress it a tad more than normal 1080p. then when i ran prime95, it went to 65C. Then the frequency went down to 3200mhz, i guess the cpu was overheating at that point. I'll re-enable intel speedstep.

Thanks man! :)

You're welcome!

Temps look fine. IDK why the 3930K would be throttling frequency at only 65*C. Puzzling! What program are you using to monitor temps? I use "Core Temp".

Do you have Intel Turbo Boost enabled in the BIOS? If not, give that a try and see how the GHz responds.

I may say it's weird, since Windows is also showing CPU speed to be @3.20ghz, instead of 4.5. Cpu-z says otherwise. I use Speedfan for temps, I'll try the program you said :)
I'll try the turbo thingy.

I'll report back. Thanks once more! :)
(I'll chose best answer when i'll get a good hang of this, hope you don't mind)

I don't mind at all. You're making good progress. Keep it up!

I activated Intel SpeedStep, however, As know, the voltage doesn't drop, only the speed. Still, I'm very happy with my OC! I think I'm lucky to have my 3930K @4.5ghz, with 1.32V. I'll definetely try lowering, but I don't have much time these days...

Thanks again, If I ever have any other questions, I'll ask, but I'll choose your answer as best in probably saturday or sunday. You're a legend, mate, thanks!
