Hi All,

I am looking into upgrading my pc that i use for gaming and this is my current setup:

CPU - AMD FX4170 @ 4.2GHZ
GPU - MSI GTX 660 2GB
RAM - 16GB 1333MH
MOBO - Gigabyte ga-970a-ds3p
HDD - Seagate 2TB
SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
PSU - 550W

Many games are recommending a 8 core CPU therefore will i see much of an increase in performance from a FX4170 @ 4.2GHZ to a FX8320 at 3.5GHZ. I have just bought the MOBO so please no recommendations to Intel.

Thanks

I believe you'll see a noticeable difference. The FX4170 has a benchmark score of 47777 while the FX8320 has a score of 8106. That's a big enough difference to see a change for the better. And if your games recommend 8 cores, it means that they are designed to actually utilize the 8 core processor. Much software out there today isn't designed to take advantage of the extra cores, but if it is designed to do so, you will get the most of your 8 core processor.

You should see a jump in performance.

The majority of games will not require the 8 cores of the 8320, though a few newer titles like the extra cores.

The x3xx series has much better performance than the x1xx and x2xx series, so you'll see a decent performance increase. OCing the 8320 a little shouldn't be difficult either.

No reason to when the 8320 and 8350 are essentially the same chip. A simple multiplier bump will bring the 8320 to 8350 speeds, and their OC ceiling is virtually the same too.

Now im wondering if anyone can recommend a good CPU Cooler, i didnt fancy the Hyper 212 Evo but i dont think it will fit my case which is a vibox predator green gaming case.

I've had some good experience with the Corsair H60, but it all depends on your budget. The H60 will fit in pretty much any case, as it just mounts like a standard 120mm case fan (it is wider, as it also has a radiator). The Seidon like logain suggested is nice, too. I would go with the Corsair personally, just because they have some of the best customer support out there.

I dont think the Coolermaster one is going to fit as the heat sink is too thick and will hit the fan on the side of the case. The Corsair is a bit out of my price range. Is there any good ones for around 25 pound.

I consider Corsair to be the "Cadillac" of the computer world. Their support and quality of products is hard to beat. I'm a big fan of the Corsair Link system as well. It's very useful to those of us who don't just go to the store and buy a ready made computer. Corsair as a whole is pretty much dedicated to the computer "do-it-yourself" crowd. I can't ever recall seeing a Corsair component on a per-assembled computer. Their parts are too expensive (because they are of excellent quality) to put on a ready made computer. It's hard to go wrong with a Corsair product.
