AMD/Intel GPU Switching Issue

Customer brings laptop into the shop with issues playing games... Built-in Intel HD 4000 and AMD Radeon chipsets. Both are installed under device manager, AMD CCC is installed to manage the GPU switching for when the graphics get intense but CCC does not recognized the AMD GPU to be installed... The laptop was downgraded (upgraded) from withdows 8 to Windows 7 but I can't seem to see the issue and no one online seems to be having this problem...

amd CCC error #1 - "No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the MAD driver is not fuctioning properly. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for your AMD hardware."

AMD CCC error #2: AMD Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using AMD Catalyst Control Center.

I have downloaded the driver via the select a driver menu on AMD's website as well as used the auto detect and that is what I get.

I believe that something happened when the laptop went from windows 8 to windows 7 but any insight would be great.

UPDATE:
The laptop is an HP Envy M6 if that helps

You are expecting drivers to recognize the GPU in a copy of Windows 8 installed in a virtualized environment, or did I misunderstand you?

If the owner does not have a specific need for Windows 7, I would go back to running the laptop the way the manufacturer intended.

It may be fastest to just swap out the hard disk on the laptop with a spare, install Windows 8.x on it temporarily, and see if things can be sorted out under the correct OS. If they can, pop the customer's drive back in and inform him that if he wants the laptop to work as intended, he should be using Windows 8. Did the laptop ever function correctly under Windows 7? I can only assume that's when all of the issues cropped up.

Disable the onboard graphics in the bios... >_>

sounds weird, since the amd radeon graphics... are on board but, they are a separate graphics chip.

Or... disable the intel hd graphics in device manager maybe...

No options in in BIOS to turn it off... the BIOS is very minimal. I have tried to uninstall/disable the intel graphics and they either find a way to get reinstalled or re-enabled on system restart...

When the HD graphics are uninstalled/disabled and i go into DXDiag and under display it is N/A for all the info

If the system was designed and built around Windows 8.x, and worked correctly using that version of Windows, I would think your problem lies in the choice to move in a backward direction and install Windows 7. The drivers available may not support a dual graphics configuration using Windows 7. Display drivers work somewhat differently under 8, so you could be running with minimal driver support under 7.

That is exactly what I was thinking so I am installing VMware on to the machine in question but in a windows 8 environment and I am going to see if AMD CCC will recognize the GPU at that point.

I hadn't used VMware in a while and forgot that it used a virtual GPU that worked with the host system GPU... so that plan went out the window but I was thinking about that last idea so I have a spare drive in the machine to boot windows 8 and see if that may fix my issue. Apparently a lot of people are having this problem with their HP M6's but some people have screenshots of it working so something is very fishy about HP and this line of machines.

Tested the Windows 8 install and the whole thing worked perfectly... so it is unfortunate that customer sunk money into getting 7 put on (because they hated windows 8) and it broke their GPU... but if AMD comes up with a patch for CCC that recognizes the GPU on windows 7 I believe that would solve my issue...

Glad you were able to come to a conclusion with the setup. It's unfortunate the customer insists on 7. 8 usually gives you an extra 10% run-time on battery, among other things, so the customer is losing out there as well. There is no good reason AMD should patch newer equipment to work with older operating systems, so I would not hope for a solution to the customer's problem with Windows 7, and in the end, I wouldn't waste any sympathy there. If on the other hand, the customer was talked into or convinced he needed 7 by somebody selling him the laptop, then I would consider trying to get a refund, as clearly it's not a better product for his needs.
