I'm on PC specialist at the moment as I'm probably going to order a custom laptop within the next few weeks, should I go for the Samsung 1600mz (1x8gb) ram or the Kingston 1600mhz (2x4gb) ram and why?

Thanks, George.

Solution

Yes, then 2x4GB is the way to go. :clin:

First thing is, you need to make sure what laptop is capable of. Does it support 16GB? How many slots does it have and max per slot? Does it support single 8GB? etc

If you know the answer to all of 'em then you can go with a single 8GB module (if the laptop supports the same) rather than 2 x 4GB modules. Single 8GB module will run with less stress to the memory controller and less power (which is like 1.35v or 1.5v)

Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply. This is a custom laptop that will be build for me so it will support a singular 8gb stick since it's in the options. And power consumption isn't a problem, it'll only be away from a power supply for a max of 2 hours at a time. I was just wondering from a performance and reliability point of view.

Would 2x4gb be any quicker than 1x8gb as it could access both sticks at the same time? Or would it not make a difference?

Once again, thanks for the reply :)

Well, in theory adding two modules should run the memory in Dual channel (if the laptops motherboard supports it) and single module in single channel. But the performance gained by Dual channel over single channel is somwhat around 10% in computer world. So IMO, that is not a huge difference and you will not even notice it. Moreover, you will have a empty slot which will come in handy if you are to upgrade in the future instead of having to ditch the 4GB modules.

Yeah, although I doubt I'll upgrade to 16gb, so the 2x4gb should give a small performance boost?
