The past couple of days i have been getting a BSOD while playing mine craft. When i first got minecraft it was fine but it is not now. I have not played many other games but i remember getting a similar issue on BF4 when i first built my PC, but not any more. My PC is custom built and fairly new... i built it at xmas so i wouldn't expect it to be hardware but i really don't know. I unstalled my AMD drivers, ran driver sweeper and installed new ones but i just got it now :( It's been happening pretty soon after launching the game. Nothing is overclocked btw and temps are also fine. here is the minidump file...

On Tue 11/03/2014 19:31:05 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\031114-46156-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: atikmdag.sys (atikmdag+0x2824E)
Bugcheck code: 0xA0000001 (0x5, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: CUSTOM_ERROR
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\atikmdag.sys
product: ATI Radeon Family
company: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
description: ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Driver
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: atikmdag.sys (ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Driver, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.).
Google query: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. CUSTOM_ERROR

Any advice on fixing the issue would be greatly appreciated!!

Yeah, i was getting these on my pc as well. For me it was a bad motherboard but I got rid of the atikmdag errors.

I ran a bios rollback, my mobo is a gigabyte. And I updated to the new 14.2 b3 ATI drivers as they support the 7xxx series AMD cards. If you're using a card earlier than the 7xxx series, uninstall all your ATI software and install the 13.12 drivers. This fixed my atikmdag.sys.

You should really run Nirsoft's BlueScreenView program. It'll read the dumps for you and tell you if you have any other errors in addition to this.
It helped me as it pointed out that I had other random ntoskrnl.exe errors. Pointing out that the motherboard was faulty. This saved me HOURS upon hours of troubleshooting. The PCIe slot was loose and was letting go of one of my 7970GE's. I fixed it temporarily by pulling the card out and reseating it. When that stopped working i put the tower on it's side. by then it was too late, the slot was actually slightly wiggly on the motherboard.

$180 for a new board and I was back in business.

Good Luck. If you need anything just ask.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Gigabyte R9 270X and had the BSOD with 13.2 drivers so updated to 14.2 beta and it still happened. I just ran Nirsoft's BlueScreenView program and i cannot see any other errors, just four 0xa0000001 bug check codes which are related to atikmdag.sys. drivers and are exactly the same as each other. My BIOS is the most recent for my board (The board is an ASUS M5A97 R2.0) and i updated it soon after building the PC. Would you recommend rolling back the BIOS or what would be the next step in diagnosing/fixing the issue? So far it has only happened in Minecraft and not on the desktop or web browsing, but then again i haven't tried to run any other games. The BSOD has happened four times so far and about 30 seconds after joining a server on the game. I could try playing BF4 for a while to see if the problem occurs. I have just performed a windows update but i doubt that'll affect it.

Can you list the full system specs.

Many things can cause blue screen crashes. Common ones being memory/video card defect and power supply.

Are all the errors related to the AMD driver?

If so, I recommend you try to down clock(so make the card run slower) the card and see if the issue goes away. If it does and your power supply is good, I would think the card may have a defect.

I had a GTX 670 that was always crashing and it was the card it self.

Ok, i was able to play it fine for 2 days after doing the fix but i just got a bsod. I know the driver causing it is definitely atikmdag.sys and there is the same minidump file at each bsod just with a different time etc.
On Fri 14/03/2014 16:23:54 GMT your computer crashed

Doing that fix definitely had an effect, so i might try it again but with catalyst 13.2. Could this problem be hardware related even if it's caused by atikmdag.sys?

yes unfortunately hardware failure can cause that error as well.

I did not get blue screens, but instead driver crashes(same idea, just windows was able to recover) with my gtx 670 that was going bad. It worked fine if I knocked off about 26mhz from the core with afterburner.

After i relaunched my PC I've now been playing for a while with no problems. The BSODs seems to be inconsistent and i'm not sure whether the fix actually fixed it but ive only had one blue screen (an hour ago) since trying it. The one thing i can say is that if there is a blue screen it will always be right after launching the game. I took the side off my case and noticed a quiet, high pitched droning sound... It's probably just one of the fans though.
I will wait to see if the BSODs go completely and if i get another one i might try down clocking my GPU like you mentioned.
Do you think any malware could cause this problem? I ran a scan in malware bytes about a week ago and it found about 100 pieces of malware.

Anything with a switching power supply may generate a high pitched coil vibration known as coil whine. It is not harmful.

My driver crashes had been kind of random as well. It only happened in more demanding games, but Nvidia's boost works different than the AMD one. The nvidia one will keep going 13 mhz at a time as long as you are in power and thermal limits upto a max set for each gpu(so 2 670's will not even clock the same in most games). Mine was set a bit too high and this would crash under Folding @ Home or any demanding game, while less demanding games would simply not cause the card to require these high clocks and thus run stable.

I would make sure nothing is using the video card. Some unwanted software/malware will try to pull unknowing computers into a mining(lite coin/lite coin/ect) ring to make the owner of this software money at your expense(power/heat). This is most times easy to see since you would have a video card that runs hot all the time.

I would certainly take care when downloading files from the internet as so many people are now a target for viruses and malware.

I find AVG is ok(used it for years and still do on most systems), but sometimes it may pay to do a scan with some online scanners like Housecall by trend micro(have not used it recently, but it should give you a good second opinion.

Please note that Trend Micro is a bit more anal about its scans so even tracking/advertising cookies are picked up as BAD.).

The software they sell is very shoot first ask later making it very good for beginners because the problem is taken care of before you even know it.

Thanks, i'll give it a go.
The BSOD just happened again. This time there was a loud buzzing sound coming from the monitor while i had the blue screen, i'm not sure why though. Since doing the fix they have started happening a lot less but not completely gone. I will try the fix again but with catalyst 13.2 in case i did something wrong or if it makes a difference and then if that fails I will downclock my gpu. I have only had it while playing minecraft though and i had an fps cap of 100 so i wouldn't expect it to be maxing out my gpu.
