Photo/video editing; light animation and gaming. Need advise for first-time custom build.

I'm as gut-level a newbie as they come on all conceivable levels, as my last computer was an 8-yr old Dell laptop, the hard drive of which finally died.

I'm also newly entering digital photo and video editing (I date from the days of darkrooms and editing decks), and am thinking I'd like to try some animation. Specifically, I'll probably use Lightroom, Premiere (though I'd really prefer Sony Vegas Movie Studio), Maya and 3ds.These are all for fine-art creation, rather than "commercial" purposes. In addition, my kids want to be able to play The Sims and Minecraft for PC, and I'd imagine some further gaming will come after that.

I'm not including information about my actual budget, as I'm having this custom built--I'm just not able to do a build myself right now--but let's just say that spending less would be a better thing (and yes, I do know that having others build it is almost a complete rip-off. I'd do it myself if it was at all realistically feasible). The look of it doesn't matter in the least to me, as it's going straight under my desk, but long-term functionality and reliability are critical. I'm also not sure if I'll upgrade RAM over time; if it's straightforward to do, then maybe.

Proposed components are:

CPU: Intel i7-4770K, overclocked from 4.0 to 4.4 gHz
Memory: Corsair Vengence Pro 16GB (2x8gb) 1866 mHz memory
Storage: 1x 120gb SSD Samsung 840 Pro
Storage: 1x 2 Tb Western Digital Black 7200 rpm
GPU: 1x GeForce GTX 770 2 GB
MoBo: Asus Gryphon Z87 LGA 1150
Power supply: 750W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold Rated
Case: Corsair Obsidian 550D
Air: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 Extreme Performance
12x Blu-Ray Read/Write (brand to be determined)
On-board audio (for now; will upgrade later)
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

I apologize--I know I'm forgetting one of the important specs.

So, in addition to concerns as to whether this is all compatible esp. viz. size of case and motherboard, and the usual issues of whether these are all good-quality components, my consultation questions are:

**1a) given what my goals are for using this system--and especially given reports that Nvidia doesn't do so well with Sony Vegas--should I be using a workstation graphics card? or could I conceivably downgrade some from what I've listed above--maybe a GTX 750 or 760?

1b) How important is it for me to get ECC RAM?

2) Given the gaming requirements, do I actually need an overclocked CPU? Conversely, I'm trying to save money by not getting a Xeon or an i7-4930, but if you folks think it's better that I do so, please feel free to say so;

3) where else can I save money on this build?--case? PSU? mobo?

4) Should I get more vents and fans cut into the case? the idea of having an overheating, smoking computer is not thrilling, but if the case+air as-is are reasonably adequate, then that's fine.

Also, if anyone cares to opine about better or worse custom builders, also please feel free to do so.

Many thanks in advance!

More about photo video editing light animation gaming advise time custom build
  1. Change the case to the Corsair Carbide Air 540, The RAM to Corsair dominator Platinum (You can get very high speeds!)
  2. Are those suggestions aimed at the gaming part of how we'll use it, or for other uses as well?

Also, are the PsychoGamingLemon who does Minecraft YouTube videos?
  3. The case is made for airflow, it has 2 chambers so it keeps things cool easily.
Etho, Yogscast, DOCM, a lot of people do.
Whats the entire budget? I can suggest a system
