Sorry if i posted this in the wrong area. New user here, but I value the info I've received from this board in the past.

Okay, I built a PC for my brother and everything works together fine. The Mobo in question is a Z87-PRO from ASUS. I'm not going to lie. we didn't have the money at the time for the OS, so I opted for an "unofficial" version of windows ultimate. I knew this was not a great idea, but it was all i could think to do w/out OS software. The PC performed fine until it didn't; It wouldn't update because of Windows authentication technology. They seem to be stepping up security and cracking down on unofficial copies. This was not a big problem because we always intended on purchasing the real thing.

So, fast forward to a clean install of an OEM version of Windows 7 Professional. It installed and everything seems to be working fine but, on every boot two (identical) error messages pop up on the windows desktop. i cant recall the exact wording of it. It says something along the lines of "this operating system is incompatible with this motherboard. I can post a screenshot later today, if necessary.

I should also mention that while installing the drivers from the disk that came with the mobo I was screwing in the wireless adapter that came with the board and the power cord slipped off the back of the power supply. I then plugged it back in and powered back on and the install continued where it left off, so i thought no harm, no foul. The windows installation is now genuine and like I said, everything seems to work. It's just that the error message(s) is/are troubling us both. I can post more specifics if necessary when I get off work tonight. Thanks to anyone reading this and please, we need a hand with this one. Very sad atm.

This makes no sense. A Z87 works just fine with a valid install of Windows 7.

Where did you get the Windows install?

I agree with USAFRet. There are no motherboard restrictions as to what motherboard you can run, provided drivers exist for the equipment.

Where did you obtain your OEM copy of Windows 7 from? Did you purchase it from a reputable vendor, or for a discount online? Did you use a questionable ISO with a valid product key, assuming that would be enough?

It's a legit copy of windows 7 professional. I purchased it on amazon for full price in their new paper packaging that they send out now. The error message(s) started after installing the driver disc for the motherboard. Everything does seem to work fine, but I get duplicate error messages on every boot. I'll post screenshots when I'm at my brothers house next. Maybe I should try another clean install to the boot SSD (which is a Samsung 840 Pro series 256GB.) I googled the error message and it said something along the lines of installing the drivers in compatibility mode for windows vista as a solution. I wasn't willing to try that as it was already getting late and I didn't want to waste too much more of his time.

and another question while on this topic. Should I be using Samsung magician software or just treat it like the Crucial SSD in my laptop w/ Intel drivers, etc. ??

It's legit win 7 pro software. This is pretty much what it says after booting on the desktop..."does not support this operating system wnt_6.1p_64_mce"

I have never had any such problems putting new builds together and the fact that this is for my bro makes it doubly frustrating for me. I figured if anyone can help me it would be someone here. Please and thank you for anything that might help me.

From the sounds of the error message, are you sure the message is from Windows itself, rather than one of the applications that came on the motherboard's driver disc? I usually start by throwing the driver disc away and installing just the bare minimum drivers needed, downloaded from the manufacturers website. I suspect if you go through and uninstall software, not including drivers, that was installed from the driver disc, you might find which program is tossing you the message. It could be a generic message from the manufacturer of the motherboard, that their particular software throws depending on the version of Windows it's being run on.

You might consider running msconfig.exe and configuring the system not to load startup items, reboot, and see if the errors still come up. It could be a utility or program that is trying to load during the Windows boot process that is just incompatible with your version of Windows. :)

Thanks, I'll try that. I just used the "InstAll" option on the disc, which was apparently a mistake. I guess this means I should probably also find all the newest drivers for other components online as well. I was hoping most of the stuff would update themselves.
