Should I upgrade my Lynksys wireless router?

I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. On a speed test I get about 6-11 Mbps download (varies greatly) and 1.08 upload when on wireless/ I plugged my laptop directly into the modem and got worse?

My internet is supposed to be 15 Mbps download and 1 upload.

I get fine service throughout my house. Spotty service is not an issue. I live in a ranch, so I don't need anything more in terms of range. I only have two laptops and a security camera on the network. Both laptops have internal wireless built in.

What would you folks recommend? Is it worth it to upgrade and will I get better/faster internet? Should I get a new modem and wireless router? A combo? I know nothing about the different numbers and letters and have found any information to be very confusing. I just want to be able to do basic stuff and have something secure enough that I don't have to worry about someone hacking my camera. I do live in the woods, so I'm not too concerned though.

I have a budget of $50 for each (modem and router) but the cheaper the better for sure.

I doubt a new modem will help. Even the popular Motorola Surfboard SB5101 that is 5+ years old is DOCSIS 2.0 compliant. DOCSIS2.0 goes up to 30 Mbps which is more than the 15Mbps that your ISP is providing.

You can try contacting your ISP and see if there is a problem on the line.

Your isp is a measure UP TO 15 Mbs some users may only get 4 or 5 mbs so your doing well being in a ranch where your likely quite far from a Telecommunications box on the road - closer to this the better

So 6-11 is good - Upgrading your Linksys will not improve this number

A faster router may offer faster wireless connection to the other devices in your home and better range (likely so would 9db aerial plugged into the Linksys)

But your internet speed will remain the same

I called time warner and they said they could not detect any problems with the line. They are sending someone over on Friday. They said they would check the lines inside and out and maybe switch the modem. (It was someone outside US so they weren't too specific or helpful, so thats why I am here before some guy shows up to do nothing)

I have a moden that is Scientific Antlanta DPC 2203C

Should I do anything? Or is everything up to par for what I am paying for?

If you purchased your own modem/router, be sure it's on Time-Warner's supported device list. Other than that, you shouldn't need to do anything. I know there have been a couple times where the techs have found problems on my outside lines and they were fixed at no charge.

Good luck to you.
