I'd like to hook my PS3 to my computer monitor. I dont have the monitor just yet. I plan to use an HDMI for video, and i'm aware sound works with hdmi also but how does the sound play? Will i need to purchase speakers also? Any information would be useful. Just a general description of what i'd need.

You're fine with just an HDMI cable, unless the monitor lacks speakers or they are bad. There is no need for external speakers unless:
A. Your monitor doesn't have any
B. Your monitor does have speakers, they just are awful
C. You are a huge audiophile or need high-quality audio

I use it on my monitor and I think it's fine. Speaker quality is mostly subjective and also depends on the model of the monitor, so the only way for you to figure out whether you need external speakers or not is to wait and try it out yourself.

If my monitor does not have built in speakers what kind would i have to buy to play sound?

Any as long as they can plug into your monitor. You can grab some decent cheap ones for $30 or $40 with some good looking (I saw a high-rated item on Amazon for around $20 a little bit ago, there are low-priced options) or you can go big and grab yourself a nice set. But, that's entirely up to you. Personally, I am not a huge audiophile, right now I am using the speakers on my monitor which aren't bad at all, so I would shoot for maybe a $40-$60 set, that would be pretty good for you it seems.

Most monitors do come with built-in speakers, although there are still some that don't. Did you not look into this before buying it? If you have already purchased the screen, the best you can do is hope, although if you haven't you can always change it if need be. You would have to find it on the specs page of the monitor. Just Google the exact name and look for a mention of speakers.

No problem! Don't forget to make sure all other specs of the monitor are what you desire, such as resolution, refresh rate, response time(important for gaming, and since PS3 is pretty much capped at 60 FPS tops, this is most important for you I think), etc. Good luck, and don't forget to select which answer helped you the best!
