I just built a computer and it powers up and everything seems alright, but then when I try to install windows it freezes. I've got to varying stages of the installation process but eventually it always freezes.

monk first off check that your new motherboard has all of the bios updates on it to rule out a bios bug. in the bios make sure xmp profile is turned on and your sata ports set to achi mode. some motherboards have asmedia sata ports make sure your drives are on the intel or amd ports. check that the ram in tight and if your using the intel cpu cooler it locked down. lot of times one of the legs wont lock and the cpu runs hot.

Outside of possible an overheating problem, could it be that your RAM or harddisk is causing a failure in the process of installation? You might want to run memtest86+ from liveCD or USB sick to make sure that your RAM will pass this test without any error.

There are also test for harddisk to check disk for having trouble within MBR or damage on its surface.

I left it on the bios screen for half an hour and it didn't freeze. It says that the cpu temp sits pretty consistently around 44'C and system temp of 22'C. I've tried two different versions of windows so i'm pretty sure that it isn't the disk. Do you have any idea as to what else it could be?
