I have an Asus RT N66U router and I just want to connect to an open wireless network via a client bridge connected to the WAN port (there is no way to connect the router via a ethernet cable direct to the network, the network is wireless and the main router is too far away to run cables)
What would be the best client bridge to buy (one with an external antenna) and how do I set it up ?

Solution
They are not a lot harder than setting up a network connection in your PC. The confusing part is they can run either in client-bridge mode or in AP mode. You can download the manuals before you buy them. They have pretty clear instructions you just have to avoid getting too bogged down in some of the other options these devices can run.

you could just get a wireless repeater and place it somewhere in the middle so you can get wireless, you could also you powerline adapters to get ethernet to where your asus router is, the issue here is neither is strong enough to get to the other, another kinda costly option is to purchase 2 ubiquiti loco m2/m5 units, hook one up to the main router as either a bridge (or you can run it too as a router and get a double layer) and hook the other one up to your asus router.

I don't have a main router, or at least I don't have access to it. All I have is an open wireless signal.

Since I read your other post your requires are a little more clear.

I would use a outdoor unit like the enh202 or enh200 from engenius. These are directional devices designed to connect to remote wireless. They do sell many other types with lots of antenna combinations. Most are less than $100. If you would want to replace the router a hawkings smart repeater hw2r1 would do what you want but I find it greatly inferior to the asus router for other features. Hawkings also sells lots of repeaters but I tend to like engenius better.
