I recently bought a HDD that failed some stress tests, so I'm having it replaced. It still has an OS that had it's product key used so I do not know if I should be sending it back to Newegg as is, or wipe it clean before hand.
If I can get away with keeping it as is, that would be ideal. The rig it came from is no longer in my possession and I do not want to put it into the PC I am using right now. I imagine a component to the process of newegg receiving a faulty HDD is formatting it prior to refurbishing it, but it's only conjecture, so I need some confirmation on the safety (or lack thereof) involved in sending the HDD as is.
There is virtually zero personal info on it, just a drive with an OS and a couple random programs. If I let this drive go without a reformat, with OS intact, would it by chance invalidate attempts to authenticate the same product key on the newly replaced one?
