Should I reformat a HDD I am getting replaced by Newegg?

I recently bought a HDD that failed some stress tests, so I'm having it replaced. It still has an OS that had it's product key used so I do not know if I should be sending it back to Newegg as is, or wipe it clean before hand.

If I can get away with keeping it as is, that would be ideal. The rig it came from is no longer in my possession and I do not want to put it into the PC I am using right now. I imagine a component to the process of newegg receiving a faulty HDD is formatting it prior to refurbishing it, but it's only conjecture, so I need some confirmation on the safety (or lack thereof) involved in sending the HDD as is.

There is virtually zero personal info on it, just a drive with an OS and a couple random programs. If I let this drive go without a reformat, with OS intact, would it by chance invalidate attempts to authenticate the same product key on the newly replaced one?

My personal opinion is you don't have to reformat it. As you probably know you can't use a hard drive with an OS installed on one PC and move it to another PC, it just want work due to drivers and such. Also by the time it goes through the process of being checked out and finally being resold you will already have had the new hard drive installed, so if someone gets the Windows key off it and try to use it Microsoft will show the key already in use. I would just send it in as is, I believe you'll be safe.
