Fresh Win 7 install

I have an older Acer Aspire laptop that I'm upgrading the HD on it, going from 500G to 1T with SSD cache, hoping for modest improvement in boot time.

It originally came with Win 7 premium 64 bit version pre-installed on the HD, but, no CD's or DVD's.

There is a Windows product code on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

I recently built a desktop PC and purchased a copy of Win 7 premium 64 bit version for it, no problem with the build or install of Win 7 and it is working perfectly.

Finally, my question is, can I use the Win 7 DVD from my desktop build to do a fresh install on the laptop, but, use the product code from the bottom of the laptop?

My reason for not just cloning the original HD is to avoid all the junk that Acer originally put on the HD.

Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't it be illegal to use the same product key from my desktop build on the laptop install?

I don't want to do anything illegal.

I guess I should just try it, but, keep the original HD intact until I know it worked, if not I'll just clone it with all the extra grud.
