USB over ethernet

So here's the scenario: We've just renovated a room, during which time I decided I'd like to wall mount the TV and bury the cables behind the plaster. Between burying the cables and actually mounting the TV, circumstances changed. I no longer need the CAT 5E cable buried under the plaster, but I could do with a USB connection behind the TV. I know USB is a bit fussy when it comes to cable lengths but I thought it would be worth trying to re-wire the CAT 5E cable and solder a couple of USB connectors on the ends. This works about 10% of the time, the rest of the time I get an error in Device Manager. I'm guessing the signal strength isn't strong enough as the ethernet cable is 5 meters long, plus half a meter or so of chopped up USB cable.

I spotted these on ebay...

Do these adapters boost the signal or do they just do the same job as me soldering a USB lead on to the end of CAT 5E cable?

Thanks in advance :)
