Good day,

I have set a vpn server here at work , and have connect 3 laptops to it.

But now what ? why do i need it for? i am already connected to the internet, how does inputing my username and password into the vpn box going to help.

added the nnas from the server, added the users on the active directory all working good. but again , now what.

Thanks

Generally if you do not know what a VPN does you do not need it. You would use it to provide remote access to your internal network or you need to connect to another internal network inside another company. Some people also use it to bypass firewalls or hide their data using public vpn server...think china.

But just because you don't know what a VPN is(or does) doesn't necessarily mean you don't need it. I have a bunch of users that don't really know what it does, but they just know that they use it to connect to the network somehow. A VPN creates a secure(encrypted) tunnel for your data - from your internet connected machine into your internal network.

That is true but he said HE was the guy that setup the VPN which is what makes this question confusing since it tends to be a lot effort to setup a VPN.

so how is it different then remote desktop?

It depends if you are just talking the communications between the machine or the actual application. In most cases VPN only refers to the method to create the connectivity. In a way you could think of remote desktop if as VPN but the communication part is very simple it is mostly a application.

Are you talking about a program like TeamViewer that lets you access your internal computer over the internet? Either for remote control or VPN.
