I have a friend who bought a new PC and is giving me the parts of his old PC. I have prior knowledge to building PC's. I have a decent PC but my motherboard and processor are lacking while his old PC's motherboard and processor are a step up from mine. So, I was wondering if I could take his motherboard and processor and put them into my current PC. Would it be a simple swap or would I have to do anything else besides taking out the old and replacing with the new?

Solution
If the new motherboard uses the same chipset as the old, it will probably run. Only some driver updates from the new motherboard cd would be needed.
It is worth a try.

If the motherboards are too different, you will not be able to boot, and a clean reinstall of windows will be required.

His old PC had windows 8 while my current set up has windows 7. You are saying that if I install his motherboard, processor, and hard drive into my rig than I would have to re-install windows. Thought I could side step this since I am using his motherboard, processor, and if need be his hard drive.
