R290x crashing with three displays

Hello all,

I recently got a pair of powercolor r290x cards. I'm running them on an Asrock z87 Extreme3 powered by an evga 1500w psu. They're driving three 23" Samsung lcd's at a resolution of 6400x1152 with bezel correction. All this running Windows 8.1 x64

I'm coming from a pair of GTX560ti's, which ran the surround setup without any problems (but were showing their age, especially at that resolution). To migrate from nvidia to AMD, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers from control panel, booted into safemode, cleaned up with the guru3d DDU, powered down, swapped the cards, booted up, installed drivers (14.2 Beta drivers), then rebooted.

With Crossfire enabled, only displays connected to the primary 290 are recognized. I have an old active DP > DVI adapter that I used with my 5870 a while back. So two displays are connected with DVI, one with the DP>DVI adapter.

Everything seemed to be stable on the desktop, so I started up CS:GO and played with bots. It ran buttery smooth until the bomb exploded. The displays went black and the sound started looping. My machine completely locked up, wouldn't respond to any input so I had to hard reset. This happened three times.

Thinking it might be related to crossfire, I disabled it and tested again. Still no good.
I removed the second card and tested. No good.
Swapped cards out. No good.

Still with the single card in, I removed all but one display and ran it at just 2048x1152 via DVI. This ran quite a while longer, but still crashed.

I plugged in a second monitor on DVI and ran CS on one monitor. Same thing, it lasted longer than with three displays but eventually crashed. I started up SpeedFan and ran it on the second monitor to watch the temperature of the 290 while it was running. Started CS again, and it crashed when it reached about 92C. I thought this was quite a bit warm so I checked Overdrive to find that the default max fan speed was 40% and the target temp was 95C, the slider was all the way to the right.

Backed the target temp down to 81C and set max fan speed to 100%. Re-tested and it was stable. Cool.

Plugged the third monitor in and tested on a single display. Crashed while planting the bomb. Temperature never even got to 81C

Unplugged the monitor, and it was stable again.

Plugged in using a HDMI to DVI adapter instead of the DP>DVI. Crashed again.

Plugged in second card. Unplugged second monitor from DVI (so now I was running DVI/HDMI>DVI). Enabled Crossfire and tested. Crashed when the second card went above 90C.

Went into Overdrive and found the second card had the default fan/target temp settings. Changed to reflect the first card and tested. Stable.

Plugged in third monitor and ran on a single display. Crashed.

Enabled eyefinity. Crashed.

Thinking this might be a beta driver issue, I uninstalled in safemode using guru3d’s DDU, and installed the 13.12 drivers. Crashed.

Unplugged third monitor, stable.

So it seems that no matter the configuration of cards, whether there is only one installed or two installed and running in crossfire, or which card is running as primary, a third display makes the system unstable.

Has anyone had this kind of trouble with the r290x, or suggestions for further troubleshooting? It seems odd to me that AMD would have issues with Eyefinity and multi-monitor setups since they sort of pioneered the technology (not counting Matrox).

Hi. I've seen that the 14.2 beta drivers are correcting a lot of crashing issues like the one you're having. I would suggest trying to run a different application.
I have a feeling is specific to the setup you have and that specific application that hasn't been programmed for in the dirvers.

With over 2.2 million unique players last month, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) is by no means an uncommon game. Metro 2033 crashed at the menu with three displays enabled, but ran stable with the third disconnected. I'll test some more games this evening, but I'm expecting similar results in all 3d apps.

I started off on the 14.2 drivers as well, then rolled back to 13.12 which yielded the same results.
