Components’ of the PC in question
CPU: AMD FX-8320
MOBA: M5A99FX Pro R2.0
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x4gb DDR3, 1600
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 570GTX with latest drivers.
Power Supply: Corsair TX750

Types of tests I’ve done: Memtest86, Prime95, HDD Health and FurMark benchmark test (which also causes the PC to freeze instantly)

Nothing is OC'ed

All components that are listed are brand new and straight out of the box.

When I start a heavy graphics intensive game or benchmark test such as Furmark or Heaven the PC will freeze withing a few seconds. Sometimes the freeze is instant from the time I open the program, other times its after several mins of playing the game. I’ve adjusting settings of the game doesn't appear to affect the amount of time until the pc freezes. It appears to be completely random. No other freezes have occurred in non-graphics intense games, watching movies, or the pc just idling for days. I’ve also attempted several other games which also cause the system to freeze. Skyrim, Rifts, Wargame Air land Battle etc. A Freeze also occurred while using prime95 after about 7 cycles.

When the PC freezes it’s completely unresponsive and must be hard rebooted. The event viewer doesn't show any critical errors after a restart. My first thought was my pc must be overheating and stressing the CPU. Well, I installed a large heat sink and reapplied the thermal paste. The freeze still occurs. The CPU temp never reaches higher than 36C. I thought maybe it’s a software issue. I've undated all drivers I could possibly find, even the USB 3.0 drivers; this still didn't fix the issue. I then thought maybe I got a dead GPU, so I installed a known working graphics card into my pc that freezes and ditto. The freeze still occurs within a few seconds of starting a game. I then swapped that GPU from the pc that freezes and installed it into another pc and that GPU works just fine with no issues at all. Next I tested my ram with memtest86 and I let it run for 20 cycles with no issues. I had read at this point that sometimes ASUS MOBAS have issues with certain types of ram. So I swapped out my current ram (Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x4gb DDR3, 1600) to some ram I have in my other PC. My other PC works with no issues while, this PC continues to freeze with new ram installed. I thought I might have a DOA motherboard so I received a replacement yet the same issue still occurs with the newly replaced MOBA. I then triple checked again all manufactures specs to insure system compatibility. Finally, I just removed the little com cap and rest that, of course, it didn't work either. I rolled back GPU driver also, nothing still the same frustrating freeze.

I haven't tried to reinstalled windows yet. I also haven't swapped out PSU or CPU yet since other PC is a Intel.

I then started searching through threads on this site and others. I found several similar problems to mine without any solution.

At this point I’ve exhausted all known solutions to the problem known to me. Ive tried to cover all things I could think off before asking for help on here.

3/26/14 New CPU and MOBO installed same issue continues.

First thing i would do is check and make sure the BIOS/UEFI are up to date. Use CPU-Z to check which bios version you have then check asus.com to find out what version is the latest release.

Next I would make sure the voltage is correct to the CPU and north bridge (NB). From the tests you performed tells me it is an issue with the CPU either being a bios setting or a bad CPU.

Sry, I forgot to mention I flashed the bios as well. I have the latest version 2201.

As far as the northbridge and cpu voltage, How would I correctly test them?

update: I don't have a multimeter currently to test each plug for power output but using a PSU calculator tells me I'm running just under 500w out of 750

I also contacted AMD about replacing my CPU, currently still awaiting a answer back.

for the CPU 1.4 volts will be high but will make you stable and the NB is usually between 1.2-1.25 volts. ram is usually 1.5-1.55 volts, this should be labeled on each ram modules.

use CPU-Z to know what the voltage really is while the system is running.

If the CPU voltage makes you stable then start to back it down stress testing each time till you have issues. then raise it 2 steps and retest for stability if not stable raise it on 1 step increments till you become stable again. this will give you the lowest stable voltage possible.

This is a picture of my current settings in my bios

CPU-Z shows also that my CPU changes from around .9 -1.4v every few seconds.

Ram is listed as 1.5

all looks good with the voltage. I think it is time to replace the CPU.

after the system loads up, the cpu voltage stays at .948v

the CPU voltage will fluctuate from .9V to the maximum you set in the BIOS/EUFI in correspondence to the load on the CPU. the more load the Higher the voltage will go till it hits the maximum set voltage. the CPU frequency will do the same. This is normal no need for concern.

ok, i was really hoping to avoid replacing the CPU. I'm unsure if AMD will honor the warranty. I guess thats the next step to try out. :fou: :kaola:

they will make you jump through some hoops but as long as your under warranty they will replace it. the hoops are just tests to be sure there is an issue with the CPU. tests you have already performed.

ok, tyvm for taking the time out to help me with this issue, ill report back when I receive a new CPU to test or if something randomly changes.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? Or a suggestion on where to go at this point?

Possible OS issue. have you done virus scans and malware sweeps?
also can try opening an elevated command prompt and using both of these commands:
sfc/scannow
chkdsk /f

you can also try different drivers for the GPU. DO a clean install to be sure there are no issues left over from the old driver. Driver fusion is a quick and easy program to use for removal and will do other drivers as well.

if these don't help you can try a reinstall of the OS.
