Question about expanding ram

I currently have 6 gb of ram, 3x2gb G.skill ripjaws DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800). My mobo (asus rampage III gene) supports 6 dimm (triple channel memory architecture).

Besides doubling what I have now (adding 3x2gb for a total of 6x2gb), what are my options for upgrading my ram?

Can I add 2x8gb to the 3x2gb for a total of 22gb of ram filling 5 of the 6 slots? Do I need to use an even number of dimm slots? Do I need to use multiples of 3?

Thanks!

Solution
Best bet would be to get a 3x4GB set (12GB), less stress on the MC(memory controller) and in a single package, guaranteed to work together. If you add another 3x2GB set there's no guarantee the new sticks will play nice with the old ones (even if you get an identical matching set, mixing DRAM can be and often is problematic)

Do you recommend I get rid of my old 3x2gb (6gb) and just start fresh with a new set of 3x4gb (12gb), or 3x8gb (24gb)?

Is 2x8gb (16gb) out of the question with my mobo?

Thanks

I'd go with the 3x4GB, once they are stable you could try mixing them with the old (I'll help if you need it) or can sell them off or use in another rig....2x8GB is a hmmm don't think so, off hand don't remember any X58 mobos that support 8GB sticks
