Hello. I'm new to the forum and not very good in the PC world.
I'm trying to CF radeon 7970 and r9 280x (7970 as the master). My pc crashes when I launch a game off of steam. My question is.. Do I need to swap the cards around (280x as master)? I'm not too sure on the CF bridge cable. It is plugged into the first slot from the edge. And .. Does it matter which way the CF cable faces? Example , the "AMD CF" Logo facing left or right. I don't see it's a problem bc it clicks in firmly either way.

Specs of PC: i5 3570k. 4.2 hz
32gb ram.
Asus z77 pro mobo.
Radoen 7970 and r9 280x
1000w corsair psu.
6 cooling fans

A few suggestions if you have not tried: 1)do a defragmentation, 2)update your drivers, 3) run Malware, or install and run it. This removes any bugs etc. 4)install Speecy which will show your computer temperatures, information etc. if you do not have it.
You can view this without having to shut down whatever you are doing. 5)Some programs require anti virus to be disabled until the game is installed. Some anti virus programs will only partially disable so they have to be completely uninstalled (not a good idea). 6) Make sure your video cards, cables and crossover bridge is firmly connected. 7)Check to see if crossfire is enabled or disables. Some games are not crossfire compatible. As an example: Sniper Elite v2 and Sleeping Dogs will...

There is a thread similar to this just a few down. It appears there is an issue with cf a 7970 and 280x. I haven't seen a solution, for it, but it seems common.

Doesn't matter what way cf cable is facing.

What are temps reaching before crash?

You are correct about the 7970 and 280 being identical. They are down to the gpu. The only thing I can think would be driver conflict.

are you using the r9 drivers or 7900 series drivers? I know the 280 can run on 7970 drivers I don't know if the 7970 can run on 280 drivers tho. They do have different coding.

Hmm I'm not too sure on that. I was running the 7970 first. Then I added the 280. So you think my pc is still running on the 7970 driver ? I didn't do anything but added the 280. Launched game and it crashed.

I've been researching. And I see a lot of ppl saying it is compatible. So I am doing something wrong. Maybe I should re install and or swap the 280 as primary. But it's weird how I can play counter strike source. But not counter strike global offensive and dayz standalone. It crashes w those two games.

With crossfire enabled the games will not launch, but crashes the computer, bringing up the blue screen resulting in restarting the computer. Disable crossfire, both games perform 100%. Both these games were downloaded through "Steam". Other games, demos etc. downloaded through "Steam" and having crossfire enabled work 100%. Good luck.

I checked all the wires and even re install gpu driver. I really think the cards are NOT compatible. I borrowed a r9 280 from a friend and BAM works. So I'm going to sell the 7970 and get two of the same. Thank you for your time and help. Cheers
