There is no Internet where I live. I have an outdoor antenna (TP Link) mounted on a pole in the hope of boosting a cell signal to allow my laptop to wirelessly connect to the Internet via the pda-net app on my cell phone. I have a router (Linksys WRT54G) but do not know how to connect, or even if it's possible. Any help is appreciated.

If you desire to have WIFI, then using one of the WIFI hotspots from your cell carrier would be your best solution. If you have poor cell coverage, your cell carrier may also provide a "micro-cell" repeater for your home. You can also buy your own cellular repeater which uses an outdoor antenna connected to an amplifier which then re-broadcasts the cell signal inside your house. This allows the outdoor antenna to positioned as high as possible and possibly pointed toward the cell tower.

My carrier is straighttalk and I have an app that allows my cell to be a hot spot (blocks secure websites, however). Do I need an amplifier in addition to the router (I was given)?

The need for an amplifier would depend on the quality of your cell signal. I don't know what you would use the WRT54G for in your case. The hotspot should allow multiple hosts to connect and will act like a router.
