POST not possible with GPU in.

Hi! I'm building my first own PC. It has an ASRock B85M motherboard, i5 4440 CPU, 2x4 Crucial Ballistix RAM and a Sapphire R9 270 graphics card.

After assembling the mentioned parts outside of the case (breadbording is what it's called, right?) I started the PC and received 5 short beeps, with no visuals. After retrying a few times and tightening the cables I still got the same 5 short beeps.

Removing the GPU (with video input in the MoBo) allowed me to get a POST. I got into the BIOS, flashed to the newest version, and put the GPU back. This also gave me 5 beeps and no video output. I tried the second PCIE port, with the same effect.

I'm basically out of ideas now. The PC works without the GPU, so it seems to be the problem. I can't find any explanation of 5 short beeps code.

I will try to test the card in a different PC tommorow.

I have also noticed a different issue, maybe not connected though: The PC boots straight to the UEFI, with no splash screen and no beep indicating a successfull POST. When i choose Exit in the UEFI, the screen goes black and comes back straight to the UEFI within 1-2 seconds.

some motherboards will send you to the BIOS/UEFI if for some reason it detected a bad setting/error booting. I'm not sure if your board will do this or not. My Asrock board will try to boot 3 times then send me to the bios if there is an error. My Asus board brings me to an AMI screen telling me to press F1 to enter Bios/UEFI. My old Acer eg31m motherboard would just lock up and require a cmos clear to get in to the bios.

since I have never built a system with your board I'm not sure what it will do in this case. But these are examples of what can happen when there is an error in the BIOS/UEFI settings.

A quick update:

I have assembled the whole PC, inside the case and with the HDD. I did it just as I would normally, only without the GPU in. It POSTed flawlessly.

After putting the GPU in (also plugging in the 6-pin power cable) it again gave me the 5 short beeps.

Tommorow I'm going to try the GPU in my friend's PC to see if it works there, and also try a different GPU in my freshly assembled PC and try to POST with it. Will update when it's done.

I have tested the GPU in a different PC, which also didn't POST after mounting the graphics card.

I suppose we have found the culprit. Should I do any further tests to be sure?

So I did an RMA, they have already arranged the courier service, but they want me to put a warranty card into the package. It was in the overall RMA instructions, not specifically for GPU's or even PC components. The problem is the GPU didn't come with a warranty card (or I have lost it, which is unlikely because I stored all the papers and CD's in one box while building the PC). It only contained a small piece of paper with the manufacturer's (Sapphire) address, an online product registrarion leaflet, a small assembly guide and a CD with drivers.

Is any of these treated as an actual warranty card? Or do graphics cards just come without a warranty card? What should I do?

no need to send a card as there is none. just be sure you have registered the card with their web site with your name and info. DO NOT send anything but the card itself. the cables and cd and paper work will not be returned to you UNLESS the have specifically told you to.

So that is something I didn't do, thanks for pointing that out. I will register the card immediately.

I'm just sending the card in the antistatic bag, surrounded by bubble wrap, in a cardboard box (not the original one). Is that OK?
