WMP 12 will not play Store bought DVD's, it will sometimes open the menu screen or FBI warning then stops and screen has a black background (does not go black) and in the top left says unknown DVD. Other times it claims there is a issue between decoder, wmp and video card. Install a updated driver for video card. This is however not true I have the latest driver and it checks fine with the system. Even rolling back the driver has no effect. It plays other media fine and copies but not store bought DVD's.

Things I have tried:
Disabling and re-enabling WMP and Media center
Updating DRM and resetting DRM
SFC Scannow
Adding codecs and removing codecs
tested with other players MPHC, VLC, SMplayer and they all work fine.
Installed all updates and newest drivers for audio and video and Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
Used Microsoft media player fix-it (Did not fix-it)
Turned Hardware acceleration on and off.
ran troubleshooter for dvd drive and WMP player says 'cannot find the problem'
Tried switching from Region free DVD player to a Region 1 external player

There is no change it just won't play DVD's no matter what I try.

This is a new (1 week old) clean install of WIn 7 64 bit Ultimate, it is Genuine and worked fine for the first week. I have not tweaked it. Everything else works and tests fine. I have installed a 1GB Pegatron Radeon HD 6450 PCI-E 16 video card, SIIG Sound-wave Audio surround card and 4GB Ram. The DVD drive is a multirecorder lite on.

WMP 12 is being stubborn, but I like it for Radio streaming and other small things. But It should play DVDs and did for about a week, I did nothing but install Windows auto-updates and it won't work. I cannot find an update that directly affected it (or is related to WMP) either. I see a lot of DRM associtated issues and complaints about WMP 12 online (It is ugly and non-customizable.) But there are almost no solutions that work, Any ideas?

Have it, not as integrated, I use SMPlayer instead better filters and deinterlacing. But for the cost of the upgrade to Win 7 WMP 12 should work it is as much principle as functionality. Microsoft is of course little help in the matter. Thanks for the suggestion though, it's just that I have a projector I use the media center with and now it does not play what it should. I also don't know how to stream the same radio station with VLC, I can however with SMPlayer.

Did you install windows updates before or after WMP worked? Is there any error messages associated with it? Go to device manager and click uninstall cd/dvd drive, then confirm to uninstall, reboot pc to see if it worked.

Thanks, The updates were those applied after the clean install, there were several and it seemed to work just fine after that, I have not seen any recent updates for the time that it stopped working. I did play a region 2 DVD I purchased from England and it worked just fine, I put in a Region 1 Chips DVD and it worked but the sound was weak, next time I tried to play a DVD it just stopped all together. But there are no Region settings anywhere to verify in WMP and the Drive itself is region free. Regardless neither regions seem to play 1 or 2 if store bought.

As to the DVD drive I plugged in another Region 1 drive and had same results. The only thing refusing to play DVD's is WMP no other programs are affected and work just fine.
