upgrading old rig

Solution

Don't know why, with a 1080p screen should it be enough, but you've got yor own thoughts about that and that's fine with me.

A build under $1000,
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3bkbe (with cooler/would be my choice)
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3bkbe/by_merchant/ (for newegg prices)

or with the components you want,
PCPartPicker part list (without cooler)
Price breakdown by merchant (for newegg prices)

The r9 280x might be out of stock for a while (you could look at others) because of the "mining" hype so a gtx 770 could be the better option or you would have to monitor the prices of the amd on a daily base. For which gtx 770 two options form me if you want a 4gb version...
The only thing I'd change would be to get some CAS9 RAM, rather than CAS10. Keep it to 1.5V. If you don't have one, you'll also want a CPU cooler. I use and recommend the Xigmatek Gaia over the more often parroted but slightly inferior Hyper212 EVO:
http://www.techreaction.net/2011/07/07/review-xigmatek-gaia-sd1283/7/
http://www.techreaction.net/2011/11/27/review-cooler-master-hyper-212-plus/4/

Unlike the Hyper212 EVO (ignore the URL; it IS the EVO they tested), the Gaia never throttled, although it wasn't always the coolest depending on the fan used. Both got awards, but the Gaia is usually cheaper as well, making it the better choice. NZXT and Enermax also have 120mm tower coolers now, which should offer similar performance but may be even cheaper now.

i will only change the parts i posted the rest of the components are listed in my equipments section
click it to read ok? i am limited to the pc shop down the street in cairo i dont shop from the net
i dunno what cooler they have and that is the only ram they have .

i have been hearing a lot about instability with the 1150 socket how about if i get those instead
Asus P8Z77V-LK motherboard
Intel i5-3570K CPU
Kingston HyperX Blu Red Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 760 2GB 256-Bit

and about the gtx770 i do things different . i get strong cpu mb ram and a good mid high range gpu
then after 2 years i replace the gpu on the stronger infra structure .

I would look at something like this,

PCPartPicker part list

Price breakdown by merchant (look at this one for all the prices on newegg)

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($312.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master RR-T612-20PK-R1 82.9 CFM Rifle Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus Z87-A (NFC EXPRESS EDITION) ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Gaming Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($142.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card ($335.91 @ Newegg)
Total: $951.87
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-03-15 19:58 EDT-0400)

I also put in a good cooler for the price.
You could save money by going for the 4670K.

If you want to spend a little bit more i would say go for the Z87 pro,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131979
A 12phase power design for stable overclocking and a lot of other features too.Even the wifi module is a nice addition.
After rebates (if you use that) it will save you $30 compared to the "hero".

If you really like the looks of the "hero" just go for it.It's a good motherboard so that's not a problem, but i looked at this;"925 $ " and figured that it was your budget,my partslist is already over that, but it includes a nice cooler and a gtx 770,with the "hero" you either have to spend more or loose the cooler and maybe go back to the gtx 760 you chose in the first place.

Did look at the "$925" again and with rebates your at $875 if i'm not mistaken and you're overspending on the original ram that you chose. The ram i chose is way cheaper,is good ram and will look good on the "hero" too.

In the end, take something you like. You might in the end feel dissapointed if you didn't.

A review with a few (three) motherboards that were mentioned in this topic,

i see what you mean vic , lets go to 1100$ without the cooling ok ? just for the mb/cpu/ram/vga
the look of the mb is silly hehe why did you ever mention that ? am not gonna marry the mb or even see it as its in the case ,
i mean it looks like a good mother board
but hero looks on top of the list atm but then again its only new egg not a tech web so its either the hero or the pro
i see those games going for i7/16gb ram/and 3 gb vga ram

http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=906
http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=1694

i guess gtx 770 2 gb is silly . the 770 4 gb or r9 280x 3 right ?

lets try

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116901
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131989
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104341

plus 400 $ for a vga thats 1100$ without the cooler you can take over from here vic

i didnt say 2 gb is not enough but as you see those games already recommended 3gb vga ram its not logical
to buy a high end card that should last 2 years , below today games recommended specs .

anyway thanks for the 2 lists , but unfortunately i dont shop from there , here in cairo i buy what i find at the local shop
ill update you after i check with them

You can use the lists as a guide. It doesn't have to be exactly those parts.

Motherboard and cpu look good,if you want to save money is the 4670K also a good choice. If you don't want to overclock are a B85/H87 and a 4570/4670 dpending on price also good choices.

Of those three gpu's will any do,just pick the cheapest one, they are all three good choices.

About the ram, with an air cooler get low profile ram or at least nothing higher than gskill ripjaws. The last looks like this, just as an example,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231445

About that air cooler, get the next for performance,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103185&clickid=2qNVruRe2wsWRBmQLp1rSzYCUkTTD0yUJXaEXU0&iradid=97618&ircid=2106&irpid=79301&m_mc=AFC-IR&cm_mmc=AFC-IR-_-na-_-na-_-na
it's just over 160mm tall which most cases will handle, the V6 is already 165mm tall which might be to tall.
for a good cooler ,not to expensive are either of the other two good choices, get the one that is the cheapest.
The xigmatek has i think an easier mounting system so that's a plus. The 212 evo, from what i gather, does outperform it.

Which case do you have?
Look for the specs and see if it can handle tall coolers=160mm at least->gaia/212evo and the TPC 612 is 162mm.
