My set of ram just came in the mail along with a new motherboard.

Current specs:
Asus z87 pro v edition
G skill x series 8gb (2x4gb) DDR3 1866
core i5 4670k quad core
GTX 780
corsair 750w PSU

I recently just installed the new ram and mobo and I check in the control panel and it says "installed ram: 4GB". I dont know if the control panel is a reliable source to read your ram or not. But I seated the ram on different slots and its still only reading 4gb. It doesnt say how much ram is installed in the bios, just the speed and such. did one of the sticks come DOA or am I doing something wrong?

Should say how much ram is installed. What i would do is pull out one stick. see if it turns on. If it does take that one out and put in the other. If they both boot up one may not been seated all the way. If one Beeps at ya, ya got a bad stick
