So I have an old HDD. WD caviar, 250gb. It's old enough to use IDE still. I was hoping I could still use it, and just buy a $12 IDE-Sata adapter until I could afford to upgrade. But when I went to put it into my nice new case, the holes didn't line up. (It has one of those "screw free" things. Its a coolermaster 430 elite) So that lead me to believe, it's old and HDD's are changed. Is this the case?

If so, can anyone give me any ideas for a budget 500 GB HDD?

with cases and hard drives there made to be turned over so the pcb facing down so that the hard drive rails line up.
use parts picker to find sales on hard drives. also if you still want to use it you could pick up a ide to usb case for 20.00 and plug the drive into a usb port.

Hmm, would it be unrealistic to buy a small (like 40gb) SSD to put windows on, then put all my games on the 250 gb going to the USB? HDD vs SSD doesn't effect gaming other then load times, right?

orange min size for ssd for windows is 120g to leave room for the os and to let the ssd wear level and clean itself up. you cant defrag an ssd like a hard drive. if money tight your better off picking up one 500g hard drive.

Reviews there say people use that 60 GB ssd for the same purpose as I plan

While you can use a 60GB SSD for the boot drive, you will be spending far more time managing that free space than you need to.

With an SSD, you need to leave 10-15% free.
On my current 128GB SSD, I have around 50GB used. OS and applications.
Right up against that limit.

And forget putting any games on it. My meager Steam install is already 50+GB (lives on other drives).

Old harddrives should still work in new cases. 3.5 inch drives. Only thing new is SSDs and those are 2.5 inches. Most cases have a few slots for SSDs as well.
