Using Existing Ethernet?

My house has been wired for etherent ports in most rooms, but we only paid to have internet in the one room. Is there a way to hook up a router or something to this so I could get wired internet to some of the slower rooms in my house? I have tried powerline but for some reason in my room it gets really poor connection.

Correction, you paid to have the internet enter your home in one room.

You can use a combination of the switch in your router, additional switch(es) and your prewired Ethernet ports to spread the internet to the rest of your home. Without knowing exactly how the house is wired, it's hard to say.

But generally, you'd go from the router, to a large switch, which then connects to Cat5e leading to each room.
If whoever wired it was semi competent, all the room wires terminate at one point. That is where the switch goes.
