I am planning on creating triple monitor setup with asus pb278q monitor each monitor has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 so from three I'll be getting 4320 x 2560 in portrait mode.

my current pc specs
core i7 3770k
16 gb ddr3 corsair vengeance @ 1600
1 tb Samsung ssd 840 evo
his iceq x2 7970 3gb ddr5
asus maximus v formula mobo
nzxt phantom full tower cabinet
corsair water cooled cpu

I know that single 7970 is not enough to run all three monitors so my question is whether should I get another 7970 and crossfire it or should I get some other card. because I heard there are some issues in crossfire. money is not an issue I want the best possible card to run this resolution smoothly.

I recommend the NVIDIA GeForce Titan Black in SLI. Skyrim for example uses over 3GB of gpu ram with certain mods when tested on 5760x1080p. Having the strongest gpu with 6GB of ram will definitely give you the most "juice" available to try and conquer a 3 monitor setup of this caliber. Make sure your psu is up to the task. I envy your situation! Have fun!

Both crossfire and sli have their issues whether it be micro-stutter or scaling. Games are getting better at being developed for these setups but you will run into them but they are usually fleeting and rare. Unless you are that competitive of a gamer it isn't significant enough for most enthusiasts to not get such an elite setup.

3dns recommendation of the r9 290x is also...

3dns recommendation of the r9 290x is also pretty good. To make comparing the two easier here's gpu boss's comparison:
