To cut straight to the point, I don't know if this is essential.
I use a single SSD (Samsung 840 EVO 250GB) and a single HDD setup. SSD being my main drive. And I use Windows 8.1.

Now, I did a bit of looking around and this is what I found.
On Intel's website, it says IRST benefit single drives as well, although I couldn't find whether it meant SSDs or HDDs. But the general message was that it beneficial to use it.

Forums, on the other hand, have mixed opinions. Some say it isn't needed in Windows 8. Some say it isn't needed for single drives. Some even say it actually makes things worse. Others say it's better to use it.

I couldn't come to a conclusion, so I was wondering if any has a more educated background on this with some definite answer.

Did you mean SRT ? (Smart Response Technology (ssd caching))

SRT uses part of the ssd to cache frequently uses apps. Obviously an ssd caching itself or another ssd is rather pointless but caching the hdd can provide a noticeable boost in speed - if you have the ssd space to spare and tend to use the same programs all the time.
