is there a way to have your computer auto detect your product key?

after re installing windows 7 professional on my all in one desktop i had was working fine for a while, now its telling me that i have to activate it again after already inputting the product key. i can't use the same key again because the sticker is all rubbed out and you cant see it. and the price for a new key is outrageous from what i have seen i can not afford to buy a new key how do i find out what the old key was?

You can use a program called the Magical Jellybean to extract your product key from an activated installation. Since you have re-installed, I cannot be sure that it is still there, but you might be able to load the Hive Registry from the Windows.Old folder. Be sure to run in administrator mode. Write back if you have any questions!

Which model of computer do you have? What our friend here is saying is that the key is stored on your motherboard (100% of all Dell computers have this). Are you installing with the OEM disk, or a retail version of Windows?

So you installed a Dell OEM disk on your Lenovo computer? The Dell OEM disks can only be activated by Dell BIOS, meaning it will not work on a non-Dell computer. Install Windows with the disk that came with your computer, or call Lenovo for a copy of the OEM disk for your computer. Usually the disk itself is about $10-20. It's the license that's expensive, but it just might work!
