I know that the M version was released,but I'm interested in the desktop version. I'm gonna be building a computer in the next few months, and I'd kind of like to have a very recent GPU in my system, seeing as I won't be able to upgrade it for awhile.
So if you have any information, or an educated guess, please let me know

all the rumors say anywhere from q1 to q4 of this year. personally i think that it will be around 2 months after they release the 790. and that is rumored to be towards the end of this month so i would say june or july as my guess. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but what is q1 and q4?

we can only speculate but in the end it is up to nvidia/amd when they want to release their next generation (though nvidia already release their next gen architecture using current process node with GTX750/750Ti). most expect for late Q3 or sometime in Q4 for amd/nvidia 'true' next generation but both company could drag it into 2015

Quarter. It's talking about the four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall/Autumn

Would you elaborate on why you think the release would be 2 months after the 790?

do you work for nvidia?
jk, i think it would be around 2 months after the 790 to try to get ahead of amd. it is rumored that amd will be releasing a 295 in around 3-4 months which is supposed to be 2 fully enabled 290 cores on 1 pcb. sounds impossible but only time will tell. a early release of the 800 series would draw attention away from this. this would get the cards in circulation and by the time amd has their new series refined to release to trump nvidia, nvidia can release ti versions of the mid and highend cards to combat this (860 ti, 880 ti). also a good sign is that devils canyon revamp of the haswell series cpu will be out and people that have been waiting to upgrade will go with this or broadwell. if they release the initial 800 series around the same time as the revamp and then the ti's around the time broadwell is released then it ensures optimal sales figures. but like i said its just my guess

Would you say that when the 800 series releases the prices for the 700 series (preferably the 780Ti) would go down? I hope so, because that may be a good time to build a computer.

they will EOL before new card comes out. that way it won't effect much the price of older card. that always been the case with nvidia. recent example was Titan Black. even before Titan black officially hit retail it is hard to find the original Titan in stock. only a 1 or 2 brands have them in stock

There are 4 quarters in a year, q1 being in the first 3 months of a year, q4 being the last 3 months of the year. So basically he is saying he has no idea as q1 through q4 means the entire year. An educated guess would be to look at the release dates of the previous models as they usually come out around the same time. They are pretty consistent with release dates on new technology as I line with whomevers computer science theory... can't remember the name of the theorist but his theories have been pretty accurate.

Q1 = 1st Quarter
Q4 = 4th Quarter
Quarters vary from company to company . Nvidia's quarters appear to follow the year ruffly. Q1 ended late April.

for product release they will stick to to exact year quarters. but for their financial reports that's different. and nvidia are not the only company that do it.

They will be released when and not until you buy up the current stock of 700 series cardsusually nvidia play it smart with this thing. when they coming up with new part especially the high end part they will EOL the production of previous flagship first to prevent the price from dropping so much. it is good on nvidia part but for board partner sometimes it can be bad for them.

^ isn't that based on older speculation (20nm GPU will hit in 2015) ? also so far i never heard about 800 series will launch in october 2015. they claimed the info is from sweclockers. but much recent info from sweclockers suggesting october/november release for GTX880 and will be based on existing mature 28nm instead of 20nm node.

i'm aware of that but if you follow closely about next gen GPU stories you will know more about recent rumors. the article still mention about high end maxwell will use 20nm node although for a few weeks there has been talk that GTX880 will use 28nm instead of 20nm. then there are talks about the next flagship will be cheaper than current one. if that it is true then it only might be possible with 28nm node as 20nm is much more expensive than mature 28nm node right now (due to much lower yield and very constraint capacity)

My gut feeling (which is worth about as much as the contents of my guts) is that an 880 will be released this year with 28nm but those of us in the budget range of 870s or 860s will be waiting till 2015.

personally i'm looking into 860 myself. depending on situation i might even get two to replace my current 660 SLI
. but i'm more concern if PCI-E going to bottleneck such setup since my setup will run at PCI-E 2.0 x8/x8 when running SLI. -

I was considering SLI (which I've never done) for my 660 TI but I'm really torn because I'd have to upgrade my PSU as I don't think 850 would cut it, plus I'm having a hard time finding used 660 tis around here. I have a guy willing to pay $150 for my card and I can grab a new 770 for $350 down the road and not have to upgrade the PSU. I know my mobo would be fine for SLI (Maximus Hero) but I could also just wait for the 800s. Argh decisions!!!!!!
*Down the road as in literally down my road, not "in the future". Lol

No way in hell 880 will cost $250, I bet it will be twice that amount at least. If your current situation is intolerable upgrade now, otherwise waiting is a good option, since prices on the current hardware should drop once new generation releases. I wasn't talking specifically about the GTX 880. I said NVIDIA 800 series which includes 860, 870, 880, etc.
