Hi guys, my first thread n i posted coz i cant find exact same post before..

i have Dell 14z ultrabook 5423 core i3 3rd gen version (integrated hd graphics) and its board gone bad, on ebay there is exact same model's motherboard in corei5 version.. the mobo looks exact same, now this 14z 5423 ultrabook has been released in corei3 and corei5 versions..

both corei3 and corei5 motherboards are available in ebay at almost same price.. (core i5 is cheaper at the moment there :p )
can i swap motherboards and lucky enough to reuse my ultrabook plus enjoy an upgrade?

It will depend.
On if the port layouts are the same.

I would do a bit more research, you may find that from an I3 to an I5 there is a larger cooling array than for an I3 since the I5 will throw more heat out, I would think.

If the case was designed for the board with an I3 cpu originally fitted.
You may find it is the case a larger blower, and heat sink assembly is required for using an I5 cpu on the board. The case of the laptop may be taller in depth if the model number of the laptop differs by a large suffix. model number to you.

Over a year later since the last post, and I actually did this very thing. I went from an i3 w/ Intel Graphics to an i7 with discrete Radeon graphics. The motherboard fits right where the old one was. However, it overheats because the heatsinks are actually different. The i7 motherboard needs a heatsink/pipe that not only sinks the CPU, but also the AMD Radeon chip. The fan is the same, it is the heatpipe that is different. Of course the graphics driver must also be updated.

An interim solution until the new heatsink assembly arrives is to place the laptop on top of a big box fan blowing air through the bottom of the laptop.

However, this is a 3+ year old laptop. The current versions of the i7 benchmark more than 3x faster than this old one. Still much zippier.

Additional things I've done are upgrade the SSD to 250GB, replace the keyboard, replace the top bezel, replace the touchpad, and upgrade the wireless to AC.
