New build from win 8.1 64 OEM disc. Asrock Z87 Extreme4, SSD, and 3TB HDD. Install went fine (I'm a 1st time builder). But - Windows installed a reserve sector on the HDD (and I thought I had specified the OS to be on the SSD). Now the HDD shows up with under 100 gig.

I haven't migrated anything to the new system yet so a re-install should fix everything.
I can unplug the HDD, but if the machines boots from there.. huh?

I have done a lot of googling and am uncertain about just how to proceed successfully.

thanks for your time and advice,

Solution
go into bios and set the cd as the first boot device then the ssd as second and the hdd as third.
boot the windows cd. select install not upgrade(if your given that option). when you asked where to install windows you should see all your drives listed. delete any partitions that contain windows on the hdd and create a new empty 1 then select the ssd create a new partition on it and install windows. windows may set asside 100MB for reserved data but after that it should install windows straight onto the ssd and leave your hdd blank.

At the 'Where do you want to Install windows 'Screen delete all Partitions using Drive Options (Advanced). Then install Windows to Unallocated Space, otherwise the System Reserved Partition (350Mb) will be created on your HDD instead of your SSD...
