Hey, im overclocking my PC because I bought top range graphic card and my CPU performance must increase

spec:
750watt psu
abit ip35v
intel e8200@2.66
mushkin enhanced 2x2GB pc-6400 ddr2 800 (5-5-5-18)
sapphire radeon r9 290
aftermarket coolers for cpu and ram

my maximum stable OC was for cpu@3.6GHz and RAM@900Mhz; cpu at 1.4V and RAM at 2.1V both are suggested maximum by many people (temperatures are not problematic.. max around 58°c for CPU)

i also changed cpu vtt to 1.2375, mch voltage to 1.33V, ich voltage to 1.6V and cpu gtlref to 67% and pci-e is manually to 100MHz. But those settings didnt help me at all.

since my cpu only has multyplier of 8 that means my fsb is 450.. that was as high as I could go for system to be stable.

im stressing my cpu and ram with orthos and whenever i stress only cpu it works fine, even when it was @3.8GHz but when I stress cpu + ram i get error. So I believe the problem causing the crashes(black screen) is my memory. Is there any way i can make my memory to be stable at higher than 450fsb like timings etc...

THanks in advance

It is possible that loosening the timings will make it stable but at the cost of memory speed. Run memtest86+ and see if the ram is actually the problem at those speeds. put it on a disk or flash drive and run it from the boot menu It is a stand alone program and does not need windows running to get best results.

thanks for the quick answer...

I tested my memory with memtest86+ 5.01 for about 35 minutes and no errors..

but still I only get black screen on memory intensive games like panzer or archeage.. when playing games like hon i got 0 crashes and my cpu is around 95-100% all the time but it only uses like 1.5GB of RAM all together....

I'm currently researching if the problem is with my graphic card's drivers, since i've seen many people reporting black screen with this chip

If u have any other suggestions please let me know

thanks in advance

If it is the GPU causing black screens, you can try the following:

-Underclock memory speed.
-Raise the power limit for the GPU. Can do this with CCC. Check under Graphics-> GPU Overdrive and enable graphics overdrive.
-Make a manual fanspeed profile with MSI afterburner (works with all brands of AMD cards). Make the fan spin faster at lower temps.

I don't know what voltage you are running the memory at or what the default is but I wouldn't recommend going over 0.1 on memory. 1.5v -> 1.6v for example. If your memory isn't stable, use looser timings, like CL6 , 7,8 and do the same with all the other settings.

When you increase bus speed on an Intel system, doesn't that also affect Northbridge speeds as well? That could be the problem as well.

thanks for the answer...

i changed voltages for north and south bridge as its described in my post (ich and mch...)

and i have ddr2, so on stock its 1.8V as it is also described in my post :D

I've never owned an Intel system and ich and mch tells me nothing. Only thing I saw was 2.1 v on RAM which seemed awfully high to me. I wouldn't go past 1.9v if I was you. But I'm not :p

I can't remember how it was on older systems but my system does not like me overclocking northbridge much past the default setting. NB overclocking isn't really recommended because of stability issues showing their ugly heads instantly. So try keep that to stock speeds.

For memory I would try 6-6-6-21, 7-7-7-24 etc.

DDR2 ram, depending on the model and heat sink, can go as High as 2.4v but usually only needs a maximum of 2.2v for the high speed models like 1066 MHz. I personally have a set in my second PC that runs 2.2V to achieve the 1066 MHz rating. DDR2 ram requires more voltage then DDR3. DDR3 is no more than 1.65v for older first gen I series CPU's. Even less for the newer CPU's.

as for timings the the fourth number can usually be tightened to the combination of the first three added together. Example: 5-5-5 = 15, 6-6-6 =18 and 7-7-7 =21. This in my experience only holds true for DDR2 ram though. DDR3 Ram, because of the speed, needs slightly looser timings to remain stable.

If loosening the timings does not make you stable, you have most likely reached your OC limit for your current hardware.

since you did not get any errors for the ram at your current settings then the ram is stable. you should look other places for the problem. The following list is programs used for stress testing the components of the PC.

Ram: Memtest86+
CPU: Prime95 and Intel Burn Test ( run both just not at the same time.)
GPU: OCCT (use only the GPU test with error check on. Other parts of this program are not reliable.)

well I found out that the problem is with my graphic card sapphire r9 290 so im sending it back and they will fix it or send me back a new one and im gonna sell that crap and buy myself gtx 780 with aftermarket cooler so i can overclock it nicely :D

since this is overclocking section ive got two more questions:

1:I will buy i5-4670k and ofcourse i want to overclock it, and im not sure witch z87 mainboard with socket 1150 should I buy for max overclocking in price range around 100-130€ = (up to 180usd)

2.Which memory should I choose. I heard that I should go for 2400 MHz ram cl10... And i also dont know if there is much diference between cl 10 and 11. cl10 ones are around 80€ and cl11 are around 110€

If you are hell bent on the haswell for OCing then I suggest go for a ASUS Maximus 6 hero otherwise ivy bridge tends to OC better.

thanks, ill probably go for msi gaming and some cl10 ram as it was also recommended to me by other friends then ill start oc-ing :)

ill get everithing in about a week or so then ill get back to you
